Mid-Week Rundown: Guzan, PDX, and Wenger a failure?
Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 12:01 AM by Breton Bonnette
Party-man John Carew fires Aston Villa ahead 1-0 away from home, but the Villans sit on defense the rest of the game. Brad Guzan posts his first ever shutout for Villa and was a big reason Slavia Prague couldn't equalize.
Steve Guppy - the 39 year old player/coach that helped the Rochester Rhinos to a decent season in the USL Division-1 - will start a new position come January 2009. Guppy, the former Newcastle and Celtic player, will join Gary Smith in Colorado as they seek to rebuild the squad purely as an assistant coach.
Pat Onstad, current Houston Dynamo keeper, was just inducted into the USL Hall of Fame. Onstad made his mark with the Rochester Rhinos. Amos Magee and Mo Sheta were the other two inducted.
A great rundown in New York Times of how Merritt Paulson, son of Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr., wants to bring Major League Soccer to Soccer City USA. Even amidst the current financial crisis, there is still a lot of chatter.
Chad Marshall could have been Comeback Player of the Year, but I guess he'll just have to settle for MLS Defender of the Year [sarcasm]. After a 2007 full of injuries, Marshall was one of the most consistent defenders for a great Columbus backline this year. Only 24, it shouldn't be long before Bob Bradley gives him a look. Marshall - thanks to dangerous Schelloto set pieces - was also able to chip in 4 goals for an especially potent Columbus offense.
Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times on Joe Roth's Seattle Sounders and what Obama's election could mean for Major League Soccer.
Would you really say Arsene Wenger is a failure of a manager? This guy does.

Glad to see Steve Guppy has picked himself up from his spell at Leeds a few years back. <shudders>Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 09:14 AM by Leedsunited

I guess Roth hasn't seen the success of the Chicago Fire or Columbus Crew. I am one of those "talk-radio" listeners who is white and votes conservatively, yet have played soccer for 26 years and love the sport. I love how liberals can get away with stereotyping their counterparts, but the second a conservative does such a thing, we are chastised like hell. I wish Seattle well, but I now have a reason to root against them. Not that I was looking for one, but Roth certainly supplied one.Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 09:26 AM by sprovi

I think it's as much a coastal bias as a political one. People on the coasts seem to think that everyone in the middle of the country is an inbred trailer-dweller. Of course that's false; studies show only two-thirds of us are.Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 11:06 AM by TomEaton

I wouldn't call me a leftist, nor would I the fans in Dallas, Kansas City, Columbus, etc....Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 02:20 PM by Frankie Boy

the only guy to have an unbeaten season in modern english football a loser? seriously? and to put everything into perspective, arsenal is probably one of the top if not the top fiscally-sound club in the world. nearly all trades on players are net money makers for the club. wenger's ability to spot young talent is second to none.
while the recent struggles are frustrating for trophy-hungry fans, it's comforting to know that with the emirates stadium paid in full, there will be huge amounts of money to invest in players. there are enormous clubs leveraged to the hilt such as liverpool and manu; leeds found out quickly that this strategy is a tremendously risky proposition. without an abromovich or saudi hedge fund picking up the tab, it's impossible to compete for titles without spending close to the turnover rate or shopping around for your own sugar daddy who may want to tinker with the club too much.Posted 07 Nov 2008 at 08:46 PM by bob_deniro
