Tomorrow is the game we've all been waiting for. All adopted Spaniards (like myself) now have to choose what side to pick as La Furia take on the Stars and Stripes at El Sardinero in Santander.

This brings up an argument/discussion I got into today while golfing in California (where I'm on vacation).

This other guy and myself were talking a bit of soccer, and I asked him if he was going to watch the US v Spain game tomorrow. He said yeah, and I informed him that I hoped Spain would win since they are going into the Euros and they could use the tune-up victory.

This declaration brought a scowl and he replied 'How can you root for someone other than the US. You aren't Spanish, you are American.'

This brought forth from me, a few thoughts.

1) Well, technically, where I'm from depends on where you ask me. If I'm in Spain doing research, and someone asks me where I'm from, I'm American. But, if someone in America asks me where I'm from, I'm Polish, from Gdansk (where my Babcia and Dziadzek are from). So that all depends anyways.

2) Does it really matter who we root for. I'm about as Spanish as Wesley Snipes is white, but that is who I root for, and that is who I follow. It's not to say that I'm Anti-American, far from it, but in the world of football, especially right now, its La Furia or die.

Anyone else ever have these discussions where you are torn between two teams. I know a few of my footie playing friends in Buffalo are torn when their country plays the US since they are first generation Mexican, say, and they are playing the US.

So yeah. Discuss.

Also, apparently on this topic, the English are becoming more and more Spanish every day. Even with the Osbourne Bull (that black bull silhouette).

    Mr. Knapp -

What can I say, you need to get a grip. You are NOT Spanish... rooting for them when they play your country is, well, absolutely PATHETIC. If Spain were playing Italy or Germany, fine, root for Spain... But, dude, YOU ARE AN AMERICAN - rally for your own country...

I agree with the last poster - you are a turncoat and phoney glory-hunter... Lame. Lame. Lame. Shameful...

I would say you're worse than a Yankees fan from Florida, but certainly not "anti-American."

The Yankees are just a club, despite what the Steinbrenners might tell you. Spain's national team is just that, Spain's. It's a team whose players all hail from (presumably) and represent their own country. We all have a choice in which club to support. A national team? My answer is no. It drains the meaning from the whole thing.

Doesn't make you anti-American either, just another one of the self-hating throng that litters this nation's soccer landscape.

It's one thing to come on these boards and say that you hope they get turned over as a way of venting frustration. But to trot out reasons with a cool head for not pulling for the US is asking for it. If the game were with Poland, I could see it. But, hey, we all make our choices. Why bemuse the local cuties by grimacing after Wolff stumbles and falls when you can pump your fist in triumphal satisfaction after the local side makes is 4-0?

Where were you born? Where were you Raised?
If that answer is anywhere within the United States then you should root for the Stars and Stripes. If it is anywhere in spain then root for spain. If it is both (born in one raised in the other) where have you spent most of your life?

First two are totally right, Anti-american no, Glory seeking douche yes. Like the multitude of american idiots with "brasil" uni's

I think it's sad that you think that you are Polish. Why did your mother and father (or grandmother and grandfather) come here in the first place? For a better life. I assume that they found it or they'd have moved back.

I'm fine with you supporting the Spanish, as long as they're not playing the USA (my paternal antecedents are from Spain). But you've got to support the Red White and Blue whenever they play or you're a bit of a traitor.

A very good friend of mine and I once a attended a match between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago. An American fellow sat down behind us. "I wonder who I'm going to cheer for," said the fellow. "If you don't cheer for the United States," said my friend, a professor of literature at a university in Virginia, "I'm going to punch you out." As Mikey said to Kay, that's a true story.
