One to watch
GEORGIOS SAMARAS
Georgios is yet to show the Heerenveen form that made Arsene Wenger monitor him closely in his early days, but he has shown glimpses of quality during spells at Manchester City and Celtic. Scored some crucial goals en route to Celtic’s successful SPL title defence and this may yet be the time for Samaras to show those who have forgotten him that he still has the talent to make a big impact on the European stage.
Strengths
Greece’s main strength is the technical knowledge and inspiration of their 69 year old manager, Otto Rehhagel. Tactically he is up there with the best and he proved it by taking unfancied Greece to the Euro 2004 title, beating host nation Portugal, the highly fancied Czech Republic, and holders France en route. There are few coaches who could out-think the wily schemer and they will be relying on his tactical know-how to progress this year.
Weaknesses
Greece’s victory in 2004 has robbed them of their main strength – the fact they were a surprise package. Sweden, Spain and Russia will not underestimate them, and they will be lucky to get out of their group.
Prediction
Greece will not win this tournament. However they may well ruffle a few feathers along the way and if they can out-think two of the other three nations in their group, the quarter finals is their best hope.
