Maybe. Since the american masses expect blowouts they might watch if the games are closer.

I'll be cheering against team usa in this world cup. Anyone else?

no.

what will increase intrest in international basketball is a reason why they play.

People don't want a closer game just for the hell of it, they want a reason for the teams to be playing in the first place, and more importantly, the knowledge that the best of the best are playing. Meaning, if the Shaq and Kobi and the lot aren't there, then does the game mean anything to most Americans?

No.

A u.s. lost will hopefully persuade the NBA to send its first tier players to future world cups.

The NBA doesn't have the power or control over it's players to do so.

The only thing that will continue to put the marquee player on that roster is money. A boatload of money.

I don't keep up, but last I checked we killed the Commies in an exhibition last week, and the Rocket's draftee fouled out in the first minute of the 2nd half. Being from Dallas I also know Michael Finley is on the team, so if any of the other players are as good or better, we'll still blowout.

Reggie Miller is on his 3rd major tournament for USA spanning 8 years of International basketball. He sprained his ankle and will still play the rest of the tournament, so you can't call him a cry baby millionare.

So far they havn't struggled in thier "friendlies".
