View Full Version : Mayen made debut for CUSA on Sunday

Gerson Mayen, who came up through Chivas' youth system and was signed to a developmental contact LAST year, started on Sunday in his first game with the big boys, and notched an assist and helped pitch a shutout to boot in their 2-0 win over FCD.

I thought it might deserve its own thread as it's just another example of MLS' youth systems starting to take hold and produce results for the big clubs. If a moderator disagrees feel free to move or delete.

In watching him play, he didn't seem out of place at all, not like when you see some developmental players trot out on an MLS field for the first time due to an injury or whatever. Confident on the ball, aggressive on his side of the field. He is slight in stature but like the article stated, he was relatively bulked up and seemed to be able to make up for his short size.

It was good to see him in the game again last night. Didn't play great or poorly, but about where you would expect him to be. With all of the negative feelings over attendance and expansion problems it is good to see something go right and work how it is supposed to. Hopefully over the next couple of years we will see this in every team.

What's interesting is that technically, he's not a YDI signing, they let him sign on a discovery. Reading his MLSnet bio:

I think it might be based on him not having been with the team long enough, and/or not being college-eligible.

Also of note, he has three assists already this year. Not too shabby a start.

Mayen got him a fourth assist and now leads the league. Cool deal. Hope he keeps it up, I think I lowballed his impact on Chivas in my precious post.

Other than Gerson Mayen and Tristan Bowen is anyone aware of any other academy signings by MLS clubs?

CDUSA have signed loads of kids.

Tyler Deric was signed by Houston Dynamo.

Mayen wasn't a proper academy signing. I'm not sure how Chivas do it, but they don't go the route that everyone else seems to have to. Bowen was the first official academy signing, Deric the second (and most recent).

Mayen didn't play Saturday. Hopefully he'll see some time over the coming weeks.
