ESPN says that a deal is near for Champ Bailey and a 2nd Round Draft Pick are on the way from Washington to Denver for Clinton Portis.
Mod, please sticky the Off-Season Thread, thanks.
Oops, looks like T.O. might not be a free agent afterall.

I don't see him on the Niners next year regardless. Who would be potential trade partners? Would Philly still be interested if they had to give something up? What about the Redskins? They seem to be trading for everyone who's available this year.

Well, the Jets could use a big time receiver, and they have three likely torqued off players from that Bailey rumor (Ellis, Becht and Jordan). TO becomes much more attractive at his current cap number than he was with his likely free agent demand.

Now that he has been banned for two years from athletics it seems that Chambers the European 100m champion and record holder is considering a move to American Football.
He is certainly built for it and clearly has phenomenal speed. How do you think he might get on in the NFL were he to move?

Chambers thread merged.
No sticky for the time being. When the action in here picks up, perhaps, but there's nothing pushing the thread down the list.

I think he'd most likely suck, given the precedent set by other world-class athletes who went to the NFL, like Renaldo Nehemiah and Willie Gault. On top of that, I doubt the NFL will want to touch him, given the current legal turmoil around steroids here in the states. And it's pretty arrogant of anyone who hasn't ever strapped on the pads to assume he could make the NFL just because he's fast. Just like other pro sports, almost all the NFL guys have been playing football since they were kids in Pop Warner leagues. Can he catch? Can he take a hit? Can he block? Can he remember different patterns? Can he ditch a DB who's trying to bump him? A lot to learn.
FWiW, the latest ESPN:Magazine mentions that the guy who will be the decathlete for the USA in Athens this summer also has NFL aspirations.
Today's news from out here...the Niners cut Jeff Garcia and Ron Stone, both purely over money (well, that's the party line). Regarding T.O., it looks like the players union is trying to work a deal with the NFL so that T.O. gets his free agency and the Niners get a draft pick as compensation. The Niners are going to try to trade him ASAP (trade window opens tomorrow) in order to try to get something better than the likely low draft pick compensation.

From what the reports said the NFL seemed up for it, possibly with him starting in NFL Europe.

That's a good place for him to start. When the other track stars joined the NFL, there was no developmental league in Europe. But I still can't believe the league wants anything to do with him given the BALCO situation, which is just now heating up as names are being named.

At least Gault had actually played football for U-Tennessee. I don't believe Nehemiah did.
And signing track stars to play football dates back to Bullet Bob Hayes with the Cowboys in the 60s.

KNBR (sports radio) out here is reporting that the 49ers have traded the rights to Terrell Owens to the Ravens for Baltimore's second rounder in this year's draft. This rocks, since the Niners wouldn't have gotten any compensation had Owens and his agent filed paperwork on time. And Owens himself was a third rounder.
G Derrick Deese has signed a 6-year deal with the Bucs, and speculation is that Jeff Garcia will sign with them as well.

Well, I thought TO would come to Baltimore or Philly. I thought Philly would have made more sense for him, but once Jamal got in trouble, it looked like the Ravens might have to hedge their bets a little and took TO when he became available. I still can't get over TO missing the FA filing date. LOL!

The NFL is starting to bleed the CFL.
The NY Jets signed, a couple of days ago, Edmonton Eskimos QB Ricky 'Frito' Ray.

Apparently the Eagle had a contract negotiated with TO and SF agreed to the trade offer, but without telling TO, the Eagles or TO's agent they made the Baltimore trade at the last minute.
TO, his agent and the Eagles didn't find out until they saw it on ESPN.
A grievance is already being filed and Gene Upshaw is already involved in this.

Screw T.O. I thought the Niners could trade him to whomever they wish.
Although I'm sure he's pissed off to be going to Baltimore, of all teams. Both their quarterbacks are worse than Jeff Garcia (at least at this point in their careers), they call running plays frequently, and give their TE lots of catches. I don't see how T.O.'s going to get more looks in the Ravens' offense.
He'd be better suited for Philly, but I like the idea of him being out of the NFC.

Todd Heap got his catches largely because the Ravens lacked a go-to receiver who could get open or outmuscle a DB. And when you have a Pro Bowl RB and the QB triumpherate of Boller/Wright/Redman, yeah, you're going to be handing the ball off quite a bit.
They'll still run a conservative offense, but the addition and TO and the (possible) subtraction of Lewis have to change things.
