Both Brazilians Ailton (Werder Bremen) and Dede (Dortmund) have received offers from Qatar to play for their national team to help the nation in their bid to play at the World Cup 2006.
What's your opinions on this? It's almost like paid mercenaries and I don't entirely agree with this, however every player wishes to play at the World Cup. Ailton is too old already for Brazil but why hasn't Dede ever been given a shot?
He is still young and there was some debate before in Germany for Dede to play for the national team, but Voeller rejected this idea.
What's your opinions?

Should not be allowed. Should be restricted to family ties and residence. Mercenaries, just like the joke that weightlifting is.

I heared that originally, but rumours now abound include him for Qatar too. Ailton can play for Germany under residency rules.

Well, usually i have no problem with naturalization and i can't understand when people get outraged about this, but even i think that this is ridiculous. I mean, they get money to play for a country that they have no ties to and probably never have visited before. There isn't much of a difference to club football anymore. But i guess they have the right to do so and there is nothing you can do about it.
And i can't really blame Ailton, i probably would conisder this too if i got such an offer (not that any team slightly better than the American Samoa C-Team would want me).

Reminds me of several seasons ago when Al Hilal was partcipating in the World Club Championship, they paid Romario to play with them in the tournament. After the tournament he returned to his normal club.

Right....but that is a CLUB not a national team. There are no such things as mercaneries for clubs since the idea of a club is to PAY the players. If this kind of crap is allowed to go on...paying players to switch nationalities....then why bother having international football anymore. Doesn't it just become a different level of club football. This is ridiculous, do they Qataris have no pride in their country to do this?? What's the point if a team made of foreigners wins the World Cup?? Ridiculous.

This type of switch would make a mockery of the World Cup. Pretty soon, WC teams will be stocked with players who've just met, can't speak the same language, and have never played a minute on the field together. I think this just goes too far.

Or just about any other big name club in Europe today...but again, this is about country, not about club. It's an entirely different situation, but I get the joke!

Hopefully FIFA will enforce the rule that they have to be a citizen of 5 years to be able to play for them. Ailton may, but he hopefully has more class. Dede, no chance, he'll be a Brazil international when Roberto Carlos is out the way. ha. But he's too good to stoop to Qatar

It's all a joke, fair does to people like Kanoute, as his father is Malian, so he has connections, but things like this Qatar business isn't even a joke. It all started after the rules had been changed when Poland decided that Olisadebe was Polish

No, it will npt happen. The Qatari team will be all speaking Portugese..... they will know each other back home in Brazil.... they probably came from the same youth clubs. They just do not know where to find Qatar on a map.
