Question about patches and lettering

Okay, you'll have to forgive me, as I'm a relative newbie to the sport (I've only been following for a couple years). There are plenty of resources online, but none seem to address club strip issues, and recently I've had some kit questions come up. I'm hoping someone here can help me out.

1) Sleeve Patches. I know that the clubs wear the league patch on both sleeves, and when playing in the Champions League they wear the starball patch on the right sleeve. I also noticed that in FA Cup finals the clubs wear an FA Cup patch. My question is: are there any other kit variations based on competition? I understand why the clubs wear different patches, but why not the FA Cup patch for the entire Cup competition?

2) Lettering. I like how each league/division has its own number/letter font. Very cool. I thought that some competitions, such as the Champions League, would have their own as well. I like that idea as well. But Man U wears a different font in Champions League play, and Arsenal wears the Premier League font (but without the lions). Is there any standard, and again, are there any other variations?

Thanks in advance for your indulgence. Perhaps this will be a nice change of pace from transfer fees, relegation and all the other serious topics. :)

Arsenal wear premier league patches on their shirts in the league and fa cups, also in the premier league. If you are the current premiership champions the lion on the badge is gold rather than blue.
Inthe fa cup final most teams have the words fa cup final 200? written under the team badge.
