Yes.
Guess who won the cup that year :D - shocked them with the quickest goal in FA Cup final history.

*btw, there were some shenanigans that year that directly lead to them being relegated iirc.
Weren't they deducted points or something like that?

Everyone knows about who gets the European places at the start of the season, I have no problem with the winners of the cups going into europe whoever they are. A UEFA Cup spot could set up a smaller club financially for the whole season with TV money etc. And if they somehow had a decent run, winning through a couple of rounds it would be great.

...would be restored if Arsenal and Man U were drawn in the semi-final :)

What an interesting end to the season for one of the "smaller" clubs that would be.

forget who gets in europe for a second...we're gonna get a crappy final

We've got crappy finals fro the majority of the last 15 years (from a neutral perspective). Semi Finals have usually been much more exciting, hopefully this year is no different.

Man United v Arsenal

and

Sunderland v Tranmere/Millwall

this means that a Nationwide club is guaranteed in the FA Cup Final.

The draw also means that there may be a Nationwide team competing in Europe next season.

If, as expected, Arsenal and Manchester United finish in the top four in the league, a Uefa Cup spot will definitely go to either Sunderland, Millwall or Tranmere.

If you don't want non-EPL sides in Europe, then don't give out European slots to Cup winners (best finishers). That's the simple solution (one I don't agree with.)

That's why they play the games. Whining is for losers. This whole "6th place team deserves it" is hogwash. The 6th place team is 5th loser.

I have to agree with a lot of this. Too many teams from the same countries. Anyway, Calais didn't go to Europe because they lost to Nantes and Nantes finished in 7th or 8th that year so they went to the Uefa Cup. I think it will be great. But I hope Charlton gets one of those last spots too. They deserve. Sound spending. Good coaching. They deserve it.

My biggest concern about all of this is that we are now only two matches away from possibly having a revival of hooligans from Millwall get England booted from European competitions.

I know Millwall has done everything they can to put an end to the riots and racism that has littered their past. I just remember what happened when they lost to Birmingham two years ago in the Division One playoff. It was awful.

And could these same things happen if they would lose in the FA Cup final? I hope sure hope not.

I bet the FA and the League are praying Millwall doesn't get to the Final.

If both FA Cup finalists qualified for Champions League then the FA Cup spot goes to the highest placed club in the Premiership that hasn't aready qualified for Europe. In this case it would go to the team that finishes sixth (first four places are CL and fifth gets an automatic UEFA Cup bid).

Hope this explains things.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but you are incorrect.

The breakdown on European places is as follows.
Top 4 Champs League
5&6 UEFA Cup
League Cup - UEFA
FA Cup - UEFA

Now if the cup winners of either the FA ot League cup were to have already qualified for Europe via their finish in the league (top 6) The the spot in Europe goes to the runner up of the cup (irrespective of where they are in the leagues - so yes Tranmere have a very real chance of UEFA cup football next season)

Do not forget though, 7th can still qualify for Europe via the Inter-Two-Bob

Er...actually you are incorrect mate.

6th place does not give automatic UEFA cup qualification.

Not quite. The FA Cup has a EUFA Cup spot. If the winner of the FA Cup has tied up a slot in Europe via any other means, then the FA Cup slot goes to the losing team in the FA Cup final. The FA Cups slot is for the FA Cup only.
