I just saw the best match Milan 3- Inter 2. I can't beleive it wasn't live on Gol TV, especially since its one of the biggest games in the world. They ran the Real Madrid game long, and went on tape delay with the derby. By that time, I knew Seedorf was gonna score the winner. Afterwards, they did this big pre-game thing with ...........Guatemala. Huh? Explain that one to me.

Serie A does NOT "sell" in the US market in either English or Spanish. Gol TV found that out soon enough.
Given the cost of the Serie A product, I would be surprised if Gol TV renews the contract when it expires at the end of the 2004-2005 season.
In my opinion, Gol TV only needs to keep La Liga from Spain, Colombia, Mexico (on tape-delay via Telemundo), El Salvador, and Uruguay (which it gets for free because Gol TV is owned by Tenfield, which owns the rights to Uruguayan futbol).
The rest, including the ultra-expensive Serie A, are
marginal products at best and are expendable.

What in the H.. are you talking about? Unless you're privy to some info directly from GolTV, you shouldn't make such a comment. Whether or not you like Serie A is one thing but don't go espousing such crap unless you can back it up. Unlike you, I enjoy Serie A and will usually record the matches for viewing later in the week depending on my schedule. The reason why they may have not shown it live might be due to RAI having rights to Serie A, although GolTV shows somewhere between 5 and six Serie A matches from Sat through Monday in addition to the same number of La Liga matches over the week-end. Seeing how one of the owners of GolTV is a former pro player, I think Serie A will be there for awhile. Trust me,if they lose Serie A, FSW will be on it in a heartbeat. the fact it wasn't shown live is a bit of a bummer but they did show it and they're replaying it Wednesday, so that's alot better than a year ago when there was no GolTV on the regular DISH 180 package.

I know EXACTLY what the h--- I am talking about.
Gol TV got the rights to Serie A only after FOX Sports International passed up on acquiring the rights after several MONTHS of negotiations during the spring and summer of 2002.
FOX passed on Serie A because the asking price was at least 4 times, if not closer to 10 times, what the product was worth in the US market.
FACT: Serie A has NOT sold any targeted ads on any US English-language or Spanish-language TV station for the past 10 years.
If Serie A were selling on Gol TV, Gol TV wouldn't be airing those games via tape-delay in favor of live coverage of La Liga, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, etc., would it?

I think the point Oliver is trying to make is that the amount of money the Serie A rights sellers demand from American television is far higher than anyone should reasonably pay based on the number of people who watch the stuff. Which therefore leads the American companies to say, "Well, no one's going to pay for it, so screw you."
I suspect that if the folks on the other side of the Atlantic made the asking price more reasonable, it would make sense to FSI or GolTV. That is just my opinion though.
I do seem to recall, however, Oliver saying something similar to this a while back, although I'm too lazy to do the research at the moment.

The problem with the Serie A: it thinks that it deserves the same amount of money the English Premier League is getting in the US English-language and Spanish-language TV rights.
Based on all available viewership and advertising data, Serie A is worth at most 1/4, if not closer to 1/10, what the English Premier League is getting.
FACT: English Premier League on FOX Sports World sells some Lager ads, not to mention that the product sells British Airways ads on FOX Sports Net New York and MSG.
FAXT: Serie A on either FOX Sports World/FOX Sports en Espanol in past years sold ZERO targeted ads.
Serie A sells in the US on Italian-language TV, but NOT English-language or Spanish-language TV.
Gol TV found out what ESPN and FOX both knew after paying plenty of money for US TV rights to Serie A.

Hello? Am I the only one that realizes this.....the Real Madrid match and the Milan derby were played at the same time....kick off was half an hour later at the San Siro. One game HAD to be delayed....and since the Milan derby was later, they choose that one. Very friggin simple. I don't think its an indication of some newfound feelings of overpayment by Gol TV. Although, I'm sure Oliver is more right then wrong regarding the selling of ads. One question, though, Gol obviously sells ads during Serie A matches, albeit the same ads that are shown during all Gol programs. Why does it matter that they aren't "targeted"? Do companies pay more for "targeted" ads? Or are you just saying they could put any game on and sell the same ad, so they shouldn't bother buying the rights to an expensive league like Serie A? Just want some clarification.

And I wonder how much GolTV gets for printed ads from World Soccer Weekly, Big Soccer and 90:00 Minutes magazine. They've gotta be making a fortune off of those guys. :p
