What say you?

I think he's a real prick and should be axed from the national side.

He's an average goalkeeper at most and should be happy he's even No.2 for Germany

Its true, he's a bit of a 'prick', but I don't think he should be axed from Germany. At Arsenal, he's been playing well enough most of the time, though he often makes a mistake. I think he's not good enough for no.1, but good enough for no.2 or no.3. With all our young keppers coming through the ranks now, I'd say Lehmann doesn't have much of a chance to be no.1.

I think keeping him in the team is an explosion waiting to happen when you take into account his temper. Besides Germany needs all the team spirit it can muster to do well in the Portugal, we don't need this cry baby to ruin the harmony in the team.

I haven't seen too much of him at Arsenal but the times I have, he hasn't looked all that extraordinary. Arsenal may be undefeated but not because Lehmann is a great keeper.

Yes, this could happen, I suppose. Hopefully not though.

He's a prick, but he's better than Kahn. And Kahn is one of the biggest pricks, too.

The team is only big enough for one prick :D

I guess this boils down to personal preference but Lehmann in my mind is average. There are plenty of Bundesliga goalkeepers that can replace him. Sure Kahn isn't having the best of seasons but at least his name is big enough to trouble opposing strikers.

Kahn is more of a prick than Lehmann.

Lehmann is better though.

This guy is a arrogant scumbag on a team of dirty scumbags. Arsenal is the dirtiest team in pro Soccer. If the entire team died in a bus or plane crash, no one would miss any of them. Thats what happens when you have a team full of french pr!cks. I hope ashley cole, Martin Keown, Pires, Lehman & Viera all get cancer.

Leh-baby-mann should be grateful he was ever allowed to step foot on a training ground. Let alone kick a football. Every GK in the PL and prob the Bundesliga is better

Since moving to Arsenal, I've seen what a child he is, he constantly whinges at the referee, gets in to arguements because he didn't catch a ball so it's obviously the opposition fouling him. To top it off he tries to tear up Kahn in the media and saying that he should be Germany number 1. Ok, so Kahn made 1 mistake last night, and he's got personal problems, but Lehmann has conceded too many silly goals, (like the one versus Leeds at Elland Road in the FA Cup 3rd Round) and I don't really rate him, especially considering he had a breakdown at Milan or something.
1st choice Oli Kahn
2nd choice: Timo Hildebrandt
3rd choice: Hans Jorg Butt
is my personal opinion, but then I'm English and maybe I want Lehmann to play so you concede less. ha

Even if he was a better keeper than Kahn (and he's not IMO) Lehmann is too tempermental for the German team. The last thing they need this summer is for him to explode. It will be tough enough for them against the likes of Holland without him getting himself sent off.

Sometimes this competitive spirit I have makes me feel the same way. These players are talented but also just as good at cheating so they'll never be remembered in good light by non Arsenal supporters. And how do you explain not winning the league every season when u have the French national team playing for you?

Well I'm not an Arsenal fan but think Viera is one of the finest players of his generation.

Maybe interesting regarding this topic. Kicker had a poll asking “Who is currently the best German goalie?” Answer possibilities were: Kahn, Lehmann or somebody else. Result:
1 Somebody else 43.7%, 2 Lehmann 28.6%, 3 Kahn 27.7%

And some famous ex-goalies on this matter:
Dieter Burdenski: “It’s nothing new that Kahn is having mistakes. There is no undoubted number one […] only the current performance may count. It is stupid to say that someone is the number one until the Euro or even 2006. But this is something Rudi Völler has to think about. If our Andreas Reinke was in Kahn’s present shape, we would have to make some thoughts about his position.”

Eike Immel: “Oliver Kahn has to ask himself why he is having such a number of mistakes lately […] For me he stays the number one though. If you’re questioning him now, it might be possible that he retires from the NT. Jens Lehmann would face a giant pressure. Rudi Völler should say: Kahn is the number one for the EC and then a new race starts. Naturally the situation for Lehmann is tragic as he’d be the number one in almost every other country.”

Toni Schumacher: “You got to ask yourself if Oliver’s battery is empty. I watch him a little bit different than others do […] In such situations I think about my own career. When my book was released, there suddenly were many new topics besides soccer. As for Kahn in the previous months. The concentration suffers under that. I went to a foreign country as consequence to concentrate on the essential things. It was the right decision. Only Rudi can decide if Kahn still is the number one. I see him and Lehmann on the same level. I don’t worry about both of them. This discussion is too early for the young keepers like Hildebrand, Wiese or Wessels […]”

C'mon, don't be shy - tell us how you really feel about Arsenal! :D

Lehmann has too big of a temper to be Germany's number one. He got himeself suspended twice last year with Dortmund, doing incredibly stupid things like sprinting across the pitch to yell at another player or argue with a ref. Lehman has done some of the same antics with Arsenal. Germany needs someone stable for it's number one.

That being said, Lehmann's form has been much better lately than Kahn's. Lehmann has been mostly very sharp with Arsenal, making a lot of great saves, having quick reactions, and handling the box confidently.

By contrast, Kahn has not been himself. He is not reacting to shots as well as he used to, he is making dumb mistakes, and he is not making the right decisions. Kahn has had back problems, as well as a problem with his eyes. Also, there has been all of the controvresy surrounding his affair with a barmaid. All of this stuff has clearly taken it's toll.

Hidlebrand, Rost, and Butt have all looked very good, but are still unproven. Thus, for now, there is no clear choice for number one, other than going with the incumbant, Kahn. Making a big change now would be a huge gamble with not much potential for return on investment. I think after Euro04, though, it's an open competition.

This from Mr Real Madrid whose players seem to get all the right call from the refs. :)
