the thing is that this salvadorean explayer, mauricio cienfuegos wrote his autobiografy book, and he says that one day in a game between USA and ELsalvador, (both teams would qualified if they tie) he was the cap of el salvador, and his coach Pastoriza told him that he already spoke with steve sampson and they "arranged" a 0-0 draw so both will qualify.
sampson is obviously saying taht he didnt speak with pastorizza....

If this is the case, they should both be banned by fifa. I remember a similar case with two indian teams fixing results, and they got a 2 year ban.

Either that, or Sampson forgot to tell his players about the agreement, who won the match 2-0...

it happens all the time but people don't want to think that the game is so dirty (and it really is and even more than you can imagine)

I imagine he's still got an ax or two to grind, even after his reconciliation with the ES fed.

US-El Salvador results in the Steve Sampson era (April, 1995-June, 1998):

1/16/96, Anaheim, CA (Gold Cup) - US 2, El Salvador 0 - US GOAL SCORERS: Balboa, Wynalda

8/30/96, Los Angeles (Friendly) - US 3, El Salvador 1 - US GOAL SCORERS: Moore (2), Wynalda

6/29/97, San Salvador (WC qualifier) - US 1, El Salvador 1 - US GOAL SCORER: Lassiter

11/16/97, Foxboro, MA (WC qualifier) - US 4, El Salvador 2 - US GOAL SCORERS: McBride (2), Preki, Henderson

Sampson went 3-0-1 against El Salvador with the only tie coming on the road in a qualifier. In other words, what Cienfuegos is alledged to have happened, DIDN'T HAPPEN!

BTW, the US is 3-0-0 against El Salvador under Bruce Arena, outscoring them 8-0. Two of the wins were in the Gold Cup, the other a friendly.

Also, Bora Milutinovic went 1-1-1 against El Salvador, losing the first game (2/18/92) in San Salvador 2-0. That is the only time in 15 games the US lost to El Salvador.

They played again down there again 3/23/93 and tied 2-2 with Cobi and Yari Allnutt scoring for the US.

A few months later (12/5/93) they played again in LA and the US won 7-0 with Joe-Max bagging four goals, Dominic Kinnear - yes, the Quakes coach - adding a pair and Hugo Perez, who was born in El Salvador, scoring the other.

Want more? Bob Gansler went 1-0-1 vs. El Salvador when he was US national team coach. Both games were World Cup qualifiers. They played 9/17/89, in Teguchgalpa, Honduras with the US winning on a Perez goal. (Despite scoring that goal, Gansler didn't bring Perez to Italy.)

They played again in St. Louis Nov. 5, 1989 and tied 0-0. That game was thought to have been a death blow to the US' chances for qualifying because it meant the US had to go down to Trinidad and win there 14 days later. Of course, we know how that turned out.

Prior to those two qualifers in 1989, the US had only played El Salvador three times. They met in a friendly in LA in October of 84, when Alkis Panagoulias was the coach, with the US winning 3-1 on goals by Ricky "Captain America" Davis, ex-UCLA star Jeff Hooker (who was still in college at the time) and former MISL star Jacques Ladouceur.

The first two games came in 1977, when Walt Chyzowych was the US coach. On September 15 they played in San Salvador, with the US winning 2-1 on goals by Davis and former NASLer Greg Villa.

Sept. 30 they met in LA with the game ending 0-0.

The point is, that even when it was still evolving and was a non-factor in world soccer, the US could still get Ws against El Salvador, making the odds of the US having to "agree in advance" to tie a game in 1996 seem slim.

sounds like it was a great plan! heh heh

Crazy allegations. And even if it were true then players would most definately have to have been involved to consciously keep the game level. It didn't happen so even if Sampson in his supreme idiocy had made some sort of deal with El Salvador the U.S. players obviously weren't told or wisely chose not to listen to him.

I'm guessing this is indeed just great fluff to increase book sales. I'm sure it will work...

As much as I hate Sampson, this is just a stupid allegation.

That's all I have to say.

The gringos have had a lot more international success than Costa Rica, have more players playing in top flight leagues than Costa Rica, and have a stronger domestic league than Costa Rica. What does that say about Costa Rica's football knowledge?
