View Full Version : Bruce blames Beckham limbo for failing to sign Chavez

"We've been in a bit of limbo with our salary cap because of some of the unknowns with Landon and David. Our hands have been tied a little bit with trying to make considerable improvements in our roster, so that's been a little bit of an issue. ... That's impacted our ability to make some changes and that handcuffed us a little in the (aborted) Osman Chavez deal. We weren't able to make that signing because of that."

Sure AEG, it's not been a distraction.
Ugh.

and so it begins... this might be the earliest i've seen someone official start with the excuses.
bruce is full of shit, either before the loan deal or after, or more than likely both. right up until the deal was signed he kept saying "david and landon are contracted to the galaxy and we expect those players back."

That kinda makes since but at the same time can't they still make the deal since the window is open til April 15?
Also, from what I read the reason the Osman deal fell through is because his team was asking for 100k for a loan that only lasted until the end of our season. For MLS standards I think that is too high! I think the league as an unspoken rule regarding transfer amounts.

So now you know what you have to work with now that Becks isn't returning until July so go get Chavez now. Another problem solved.

So he basically didnt foresee the problems ahead with Beckham and chose to relax during the offseason. He should have been out there, or his scouts, or someone trying to get us a guy or two. Finding the next Carlos Ruiz, the next Robin Fraser. The next Kevin Hartman. Instead we got a half assed team, excuse my Francaise, but this smells.

Contrast this to Osorio's approach:
With the focus on getting younger and faster this year, Osorio traded midfielder Dave van den Bergh, arguably the team's best player last season, to FC Dallas for speedy forward Dominic Oduro, who will partner with Juan Pablo Angel up front.

Now I'm not sure Osario has the answer, but in years past the younger, faster, more athletic teams tend to shine come playoff time. And even if RB's don't tear up the league this year I'm still pretty sure the correct approach isn't to focus on getting older and slower, a la Bruce.

We did try out (and cut) Bautista.
That said, it seems more like a trend with the Galaxy, rather than anything Bruce is doing. In 2008, despite defensive frailties that were appallingly obvious in the very first preseason game against Gamba Osaka, we didn't bring a single player in on trial for the entire preseason who wasn't already in camp by then. I was talking about it back then too: no one else in the league was so inactive in the preseason. And we see much of the same again this year - no new faces in camp for most of the preseason since Yohance Marshall showed up in early February. Three trialists turning up in the last couple days before the Arizona trip, but too little, too late. ALL FOURTEEN other teams looked at more players.

Hey guys..I don't want to start a new thread, but I don't know where is the better place to get your attentions, but I have to ask this..What do you guys know about Real Madrid wanting to hijack the Milan-Galaxy deal during this Summer? Have you heard anything new apart from this:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/davidbeckham/5009827/David-Beckham-linked-with-Real-Madrid-return.html

All I can say is that..MLS and LAG will finally get the money they wanted (probably more) if this is true.

I am all for it-- not that matters. :D
In any case, it would teach AC Milan how business is conducted in a respectful manner.

Actually, Real Madrid practically invented the practice of "tapping up" players that they want. (Hey, C. Ronaldo anyone?) I think the only lesson AC Milan would learn is that the richest club in the world (according to this year's reports) has more money than them and can pay more for players.
That being said, though, I think it'd be hysterical if Milan got beat out to the post for his services. Somehow I'd doubt Beckham would go for that, though. He doesn't like re-tracing his steps, and going back to Madrid just seems unlikely, no matter who is coaching there by then.
