I thought he did quite well including how he got back on defense. Now he gets to play for us after as good an offseason as we could have hoped for.

At least he didn't play as poorly as Hejduk. If he could have just flipped it over the keeper he would have had himself a goal and everyone would be going nuts on this board.
Bobby and everyone else for that matter looked like whenever something would start to build up, a bad touch or a defender would be there to end the run. Overall he had one of the better days for the US side.

I thought Convey was good today as well.. He did very well getting upfield and back on defense as well..
I love how a lot of posters claim Convey needs to finish that chance better.. This makes me wonder exactly how many of these fans have ever actually played the game before.. Bobby had no chance to score there as Van Der Sar was on top of him like Madonna on one of her Hermaphrodite dancers.. The only option Convey had would have been a quick touch to his right and then a poke into the net, but seeing as Van Der Sar is about 6'6", it's kind of hard to side step a Praying Mantis, especially when that was the first real scoring chance we had..
Totally off subject, but how bad was Rob Stone today? Bundeshliga? Who the hell is Nisstelroy?

Convey had a good game.
He should have finished that chance, I don't care who the goalkeeper is.

It's not the fact that the goalkeeper is famous, it's the fact that he was on top of Convey in an instant, giving Convey no choice but to simply poke at the ball and hope it squeezes through.. That goalie could have been Paul "Pants" Grafer and he would have had a difficult time finishing that chance..
What am I saying? Grafer would have tripped, his pants snagging on the goalpost..

I didn't see the game, unfortunately, but I did get a look at the new kits. Center-mounted badge and a big-ass glaring circled number on the front...since when do we need to look like Speed Racer?

I think that was an opportunity Convey should have finished and yes I played and still play soccer. The keeper was going down and Convey could have tried to lob it over and into the net.

I guess we'll have to disagree then.. I just don't see how you can lob over a 6'6" keeper right on top of you inside of 10 yards of the goal.. If Convey had done that, it truly would have been a world class goal..
When a keeper comes out on you like that and narrows down all the angles, Convey did the only thing he could do which was try to force it through the keeper..
I guess I saw that play differently than most people did..

When I saw it live, I thought he should have scored, however seeing it live the ball was at an odd angle, it was too high to head and too low to get a good touch. I think his only chance would have been to take a touch to his right since the keeper was already going down, but I'm not sure if he had the space to do so.

And as a person who plays all 11 postions I must also disagree with you :( , Convey had no chance to score on that play. Edwin had him dead to rights. No way anyone shy of Ronaldo or another one of this worlds talented Barzilians would have been able to finish it. Edwin read the play perfectly and shot down all the good options available to Convey.
Sorry I am not fond of the "Speed Racer" jersey's Nike has come up here with. :(

I think it is interesting the difference in the tone of the comments about Bobby's play. I have read elsewhere on the boards that Bobby is crap and that he should only get called up against America Samoa.
I think there are a great deal of people who don't seem to understand that the USA still doesn't have a lot of depth. I can't think of many midfielders in MLS that are National Team class. Bobby isn't as good as Reyna or JOB, but he is a lot closer then anyone I can come up with off the top of my head.
Anyhow, he didn't finish a difficult chance and didn't have the best game. However, I think he has shown that he can play on the international level consistently.

I agree with Cweedchop. That was close to an impossible chance. The only chance Convey had was to hammer it down and hope it got through a temporary five hole b/w Van der Saar's legs, which is more or less what he tried to do. The missed chance for me was Beasley one-v-1 with the keeper a few minutes later...
not a great chance and not really Beasley fault, he didn't have a great angle, defenders around, and Van der Saar big as a moose but I think he made the wrong choice to go high, the low corners looked better choices, harder for Van der Saar to get down there.

I thought Convey had a good game, and I don't think he could have done anything differently on his chance. I'm looking forward to him getting a chance in the middle with DCU.
There is one thing I need to nitpick about though...
Does Convey realize he has a right foot? Maybe it's just me, but it seems like he's almost exclusively left-footed when dribbling, passing, or even shielding the ball. (remind you of anyone?)Thoughts?

Maybe being freed from the evil influence of El Diablo will help him remember his right foot. :)

Convey had a very good game. He worked very hard, and missed a very difficult shot. Absolutely stunning that Stone and Balboa repeated that Convey had to finish that shot.

Convey played pretty well. He worked hard off the ball (probably the hardest on the team) and did well defensively. I don't think that his chance was a gimmie, it would have taken a spectacular play to finish. I do think he has to do better in the final third of the field, though.

1. The most irritating thing about this match was Stone & Balboa not being able to say the Van in "Van Nistelrooy" or "Van Hooijdonk". I like those guys, but that was annoying.
2. The Convey "chance" was a half-chance at best and was a really great play by Van der Sar to read Beasley's pass and gobble up the space between him and Bobby. Marcelo originally said it was a great save by VdS, but later said Bobby has to finish that. Make up your mind 'Celo.
3. I thought our backline defended well but demonstrated a horrifying lack of touch on the ball.
I thought Bobby played pretty well. He seemed to be willing to take players on and track back on defense. He had some rough touches at the end of some of his runs that need to improve, but overall I thought he played well.
Reyna looked great. Armas should never dribble. Hejduk scares the crap out of me. Beasley needs to gain some weight (as usual).

I think this was Bobby's best game for the full squad so far. He and Reyna worked very well together in the center, even though it exposed Hejduk on the right.
