Is this decision by the DC brass good, bad, ugly?

I don't see any such quote in the Daily News.

The Metros will only be compensated if Moreno actually signs for DC United. Thus far he hasn't. Indeed, he hasn't even made the team.

It's there, just in a "Sports Wire" section:

http://www.nydailynews.com/02-18-2004/sports/story/165608p-144997c.html

The MetroStars agreed to trade rights to Bolivian F Jaime Moreno back to D.C. United for draft picks, GM Nick Sakiewicz said during the MetroStars' 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids in a scrimmage Monday in Bradenton, Fla.

Still, that only makes sense if he actually makes the team and is signed.

Why should the Metro get any compensation for Moreno? Didn't they release him outright?

FWIW, I believe that is a player is out of contract with MLS, he should be free to sign with any MLS team. Of course, MLS will keep their reserve clause for as long as they can.

Edited to say: Welcome to BigSoccer, somebody.

I read less into that then you do. I actually think the use of the plural there just indicates an indeterminate number. So it may be one pick, but it may also be multiple picks. I would bet, in the end, that the number depends a lot on Moreno's performance.

I would not expect anything higher than a conditional pick. Starting in the third round and going down from there based upon production.

Yeah I don't understand either...a player is out of contract but we have to give up draft picks to sign him? Sounds like MLS bullcrap to me.

But, if I've "agreed" to give "picks," I've agreed to give more than one, so I hope the article is either imprecise or is prematurely including whatever conditional compensation might come later based on performance or appearances.

Yeah, as Mr. Shah says above, this shouldn't be the case, but this rule has been in place for years. If somebody wanted to sign Etch, they would owe us....something.

Benjamin- If Plate O' Food is actually healthy and motivated, could you imagine him not making the team? Hell, you'd pen him in the starting lineup...

Skip - You're right. But that's still a pretty significant "if" you got there.
