Draft Rules

1 - Squad Make-Up - all drafters will (in the draft order specified) select a squad of 16 players. At least one player must be a goalkeeper but there is no need for a second goalkeeper. There are no other restrictions based on possitions.

2 - Player Eligibility - Any currently playing (ie not retired as of today) player may be selected for the draft.

3 - Form and Injuries - You are selecting a 16 man squad to compete in a tournament immediately. Therefore you should use form over a recent timeframe (1-2 years) as a guide, however if you feel you can justify picking an out of form player then you can. Be aware though that you are taking a risk, and that if the judges do not agree with you that you may be penalised. Equally be aware that if a previously mediocre player is currently on fire, then this may be held against him by the judges.

On the issue of injuries every player is eligible for the draft, however if that player is currently out with a long term injury, or that player has a history of injury then you will need to give a justification over their selection. As a rough guidance we will use Sweetness' suggestion. If a player is currently out with a long-term injury, their form and fitness will be considered to be at a lower level in correlation to their time on the sidelines, i.e. as they had been rushed back into contention after their spell on the sidelines and are therefore as unfit and out of form as the length of the injury would suggest. If a player has been out for six months they will be very unfit and out of form. If a player has been out for two weeks there will be little to no effect.

Ultimately this whole draft is subjective, and this is merely trying to give you a guideline for your selections. There is no formula to determine how good a selection is. This is a difficult issue that I've tried to make as clear as possible

4 - Draft Order - the draft order has been determined. Any drafter missing their turn will have to wait until the end of that round to make their next pick.

5 - Judges - at present 4 judges have been selected for the draft, Dark Savante, lanman, ASF and jpick. More will be explained later. We are waiting to hear on one more.

6 - Post-draft Tournament - with 16 teams, the tournament will be run along the lines of the European Championships. 4 randomly drawn groups of 4, top 2 advancing into a straight knock out tournament. The format of the knock out tournament will be copied exactly from that format. If for any reason there are less than 16 teams then some of the groups will only contain 3 teams.

7 - Champion - the winning drafter will have the option of picking first in next years draft on top of any kudos that comes with winning. In addition, they may also add to their signature the line "2009 Big Soccer World Draft Champion".

8 - Flexibility - the rules are set in stone. If you are not happy with them then you are under no obligation to take part.

9. Missing your turn - You forfeit your place in the round and will pick at the end of the round. If you wont be around at the time the round ends make sure you PM somone your pick. You will be given a 2hr window at the end of the round to post your pick, otherwise you are forfeit again and will have to make your outstanding pick at the end of the current round.

10. Drafters are not permitted to talk about as yet unchosen players in the Draft. We'd also request that observers of the Draft adhere to this rule.

11. If BS is playing up or down completely and others can corroberate they have had trouble getting on the site, leniency with missing timeslots will be OK and allowances can be made under such circumstance.

12. During your window, you may only pick if 1) the drafter prior to you has picked or 2) if the prior drafter's time has run out. Even if it is your window, you cannot pick before either 1) or 2) have occured.

1. comme and The Double 4pm-6pm
2. Twix and Benni 7.30-9.30pm
3.Twenty26Six and BillyIreland 8pm-10pm
4. Grinners89 and CCSC_Strikers20 9pm-11pm
5. bspsoccer + Frasermc 9.30-11.30pm
6. Kevin8833 + Beazley17 10pm-12pm
7. johno and schafer 10.30pm-12.30am
8. sdotsom/cr7torossi 11pm-1am
9. impalemplz 12am-2am
10. man_in_the_middle and BishopMVP 2am-4am
11. Perufc 3am-5am
12. Chelsea Supporter and KumarsS 3.30am-5.30am
13. Teso and SirManchester 4am-6am
14. larrygiterdone 4.30am-6.30am
15. zakinator and Dr.Phil 5-7am
16. Sweetness 11am-1pm

At the end of the first round, the order reverses so the order becomes

1. Sweetness
2. zakinator and Dr.Phil
3. larrygiterdone
4. Teso and SirManchester
5. Chelsea Supporter and KumarsS
6. Perufc
7. man_in_the_middle and BishopMVP
8. impalemplz
9. sdotsom/cr7torossi
10. johno and schafer
11. Kevin8833 + Beazley17
12. bspsoccer + Frasermc
13. Grinners89 and CCSC_Strikers20
14. Twenty26Six and BillyIreland
15. Twix and Benni
16. comme and The Double

Then it reverts back to the order of the first round. in rounds 2,4,6 etc a drafter has a 4 hour window in which to pick starting from when the previous drafters made their pick. If you miss this slot you may pick when you return (unlike on rounds 1,3,5 etc).

As well as these rules here are a couple of hints for best practice and an enjoyable draft.

1. Please be polite and courteous. This is meant to be a pleasant experience. Therefore it helps if people can actually be pleasant towards each other. In 2006 some people made the draft such a misery that I didn't organise it in 2007. Don't make that happen again, especially after last year was so good.

2. Don't be lazy. Rather than asking "Is it my turn? When is my timeslot?", try and find out yourself. It's not rocket science.

3. If you are about to go offline PM your pick. I cannot stress this enough. PM your pick and make sure you have some alternatives.

Some further tips as to how to do well in this draft.

1. Have a system in mind from the start, or at least know how you are going to draft. Some people will go for the best available player for the early rounds, and then go for a system, but you need to have a team in mind. There's no point is having three world class left wingers in your team.

2. Discuss with your partner if you have one, or at least have a plan. Don't assume that the person you want will be available when you come to pick, because these things have a habit of not working out. Last minute rushed picks, tend to lead to disaster. Hopefully someone will keep a log off people that have been picked.

3. Don't just blindly pick your favourites. A number of teams have been ruined by a bad early pick of a personal favourite, who would have been available in the latter rounds.

4. Do some research. Look to widen your net, and go for players outside of the big clubs if you can. There is a wealth of information out there.

So has this officially started or something?

I should be back to my timeslot.

This isnt very good advice to newbies because I safely assume that 3 of the 4 judges arent exactly enthralled in leagues that arent the biggest leageus. There is no guarantee that the judges know some players who are clearly outstanding in other leagues.

People stay safe and pick the more popular players because they know the judges should know about them. The main thing in all his confusion would be a judge that doesnt rate a player as highly as he deserves to be rated in this draft. Yeah, I know the draft is subjective...

Anyhow, ASF, Im sure he watches SA football, but how much of that is outside of his domestic league and Copa Liba? Not trying to insult your intelligence as I do respect your opinion on footballing issues, but just pointing something out.

There is one more person that I would like to see if he could become a judge. Celito from the Brazil board, or Mengao who is a mod.

I have kicked it off slightly early, and we have taken the obious choice.

benni- My point about casting your net, is that players from the Premiership and bigger clubs are going to be at a premium. The teams that do well in this are likely to be those who have a larger pool to select from.

poor selection. shite player, diver etc. Can't believe he didn't last until at least maybe the 7th pick of the draft.

i decided to be light about it. for my money, the "obvious choice" wont get picked till 3rd or maybe could fall to 7th or 8th :)

I'm just being an ass and praying someone who could easily have been picked first or second and should go 3rd is still around when we pick :D

Picks are falling as I predicted. Congrats to comme and The Double for picking the best player available with their first pick. Shame on the next guys for picking such a terrible player. :p

Two first picks were obvious.

Now the draft starts to get a bit more interesting. Especially after the first 8 picks or so.

The 3rd pick was probably the place I last place I wanted to pick (followed closely by last where I ended up) because it there is no clear third pick.

28 goals and 13 assists in 27 club games this year. Staggering.

Says you. ;)

And btw me and torossi were picking last last year and it wasn't so bad. Especially this year were there isn't a clear group of elite players.

I think there is a pretty clear third pick. But we will see what the third selection team does.

My position is an interesting one. Who is left for me to build around. I love the anticipation.

I'm not so sure. The first two pick themselves, but after that there are several players who could be justified as the next pick depending on how people want to take their team forward.

I often think that picking later in the draft can help you. In the early rounds you may find it more difficult to pass up on a player that might not fit the overall idea of the team you want. You also get you're first two picks close together which can give you a better base to your team.

Well, this draft began with the first two obvious pick (different of the last I remember :D). I haven't do my list of options yet, I hope my "shield player" won't be picked.

i guess we should go ahead and make explicit that in the discussion threads, no unpicked players are to be named, for any newer posters who didn't participate last season.

don't know if this was already said elsewhere, if so sorry for the redundancy
