Former United defender David Vaudreuil has been named head coach of the A-League's Atlanta Silverbacks.

I wonder if he'll hire any former United players as assistants.

And, if he does well down there, he could be a candidate to take over here when Nowak jumps to the Polish national team based on his vast success here!

Congratulations to Vaudreuil.

I always respected how he left everything on the field for DC United.

I hope that happens after the 2006 World Cup when Bruce Arena can come back to DC United! :)

"Silverbacks?" as in the gorilla? What's with that? Are they sponsored by the local zoo?

no, the name is just an ode to local history... the atlanta zoo has one of the most famous lowland gorilla exhibits in the world and works very closely with emory university's primate research center. the zoo was once one of the worst in nation and even lost its national accredaton at one point, but it tranformed during the 80s into one of the best in the country and has stayed so. the foundation of this rise was a male gorilla named willie b (after mayor hartsfield). the gorilla became a cult figure in the city during the 60s, 70s, and 80s when the zoo had fallen on tough times and eventually fathered many of the babies that would later make the zoo flourish in the late 80s and 90s. when he died in 2000, it was pretty big local news.

anyway, i kinda like the name. it beats the hell out of "burn" or "crew." ;)

and hopefully, i will get to see some of the silverbacks' games when i move up to athens this summer.

I always liked Vaud. He was never a great player, but as Jose noted, he gave everything he had on the field.

Congrats on landing the new gig. I hope he swings by the Barra during the season to quaff a few brewskies.

Remember, he scored the series-winning goal in game 2 against Columbus wayyyyyy back in year 2. He definately has a place in United history!
