View Full Version : How have you screwed up taping the game?

Typical Offseason post.
I'm amazed at the number of ways I've screwed up taping the next big soccer game. I am wondering if anyone can add to my list. And no, I don't own Tivo, yet.
1) Wrong time.
2) Wrong channel.
3) AM/PM
4) Not having tape in machine.
5) Having a write-protected tape in the machine.
6) Tape in machine is already at the end of the tape.
7) Not have cable plugged in.
8) Not having vcr turned off (my vcr must be turned off or it won't record)
9) Having volume turned down. (Sometimes a blessing.)
10) Not having vcr plugged in.
Games I don't have recorded because one of the above issues.
1) US vs Mexico WC (Reason #2)
2) Quakes vs Fire (Reason #8)
That's 10. Add your own.

11. Having the VCR programmed to record at the right time, but having the VCR clock at the wrong time.
That's the cruelest of all.

Well, over the past 3-4 years, I almost always watch the games on tape. Even if I watch a game live, I still use the VCR to record it. So in that time-span, I've taped thousands of game.
Try this:
- you set the VCR to record the program alright, and the recording starts alright, but your 2-year old finds the lights on the front panel quite interesting, plays with the buttons and stops the recording.
- you record the game alright, but you forget about it and overwrite it with another recording
- you have to record multiple games, but forget to change the recording mode of the first game to EP; the tape runs out after two hours.
- game recording OK, but during the recording, there is a rainstorm or the dish gets blown off target a little bit. The game becomes "Acquiring Satellite Signals"
- using a cable box that doesn't have built-in timer; you want to do unattended recording: 1st game on channel X and 2nd game on channel Y. How do you change channel unattended at a specific time? I use a Palm's infrared blaster with remote control software. This software gave me a lot of problem since it can't change channel properly after a while. It has to be re-trained.
And the most annoying tape screw up is:
The game is recorded, but the tape is bad, lots of hiccups and glitches. The game becomes unwatchable.

Not knowing how to program the VCR. Seeing that we have one of those new ones, I have to admit that we're guilty of that.
And for a more likely excuse, effective for midweek this week...
12. The game's not available in my area.
As I've brought up on this thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=96581) on the USA boards, I won't be able to watch the USA-Holland match from Amsterdam this midweek, so could someone tape the game for me, and send me the tape? Our universal VCR plays both formats (NTSC and PAL), and I'll gladly re-imburse for materials and shipping.
If you can help, either reply on that thread, or just PM me.

Well, I have Tivo, and believe me there are still ways to screw up taping a game. The cruelest was one particular huge US Men's National Team game (but now I don't remember which one--I just remember it was very big...). My wife and I went away for the weekend to a secluded cabin that had no tv, let alone cable or satellite to watch the game. I had Tivo set to record the game, but found when I got home that the cable connector leading from my satellite to the cables that entered my home had rusted through when I was gone, thereby eliminating the satellite signal for the entire weekend.

Having my girlfriend change the channel 10 minutes into the match and then having something worthless get taped. This happened this summer during one of the Gold Cup matches.

Maybe I should explain a little bit.
When I had my satellite initially installed, I had a guy who didn't really do a very good job, when he ran the satellite cables down to the house, he used a female/female connector to connect the satellite cables to the cables that go into the house. The little female/female connector was very cheap, and the whole thing rusted out and ruined the connection from my satellite. Perhaps I gave the impression that the rusting happened over a weekend, which, of course, just couldn't happen. THe rusting occurred over many months--the connection broke the weekend I was away.
I love my Tivo. No longer do I have those problems (expect when a game goes into OT) ;)

Yep, that's one I've done too. Nothing like watching the few minutes of an intro and go to snow.

I once tried to tape a World Strongest Man marathon and then came home to find a bunch of foreign wimps in funny shirts falling down all the time.

Cassette - check
Channel -check
Timer - check
Record Mode - check
Finding out that the first 20 minutes of your game was interrupted by some yahoo's who were not able to put a little white ball into a hole in the ground.

One time I was taping a match on FSW that came on during the week... and I set the channel on my digital cable box..... the channel was right, but when I went to watch the tape apparently FSW had glitched and there was ONE frame of some girls gone wild movie stuck on the TV, I got the match audio and two hours of some ugly girls ass.

Tried to tape a game on FSW while my family was at Disney. The kid who was feeding our pets stayed to watch a little Comedy Central.
