Red and Black and... Green?!!

Yup, that's right.

If you're a season-ticket holder you may have already gotten the notice about "United We Party".

D.C. United is one of the sponsors of Shamrockfest (http://www.shamrockfest.com/2009/index.php) and for those who are not fortunate enough to be heading down to Charleston, S.C., there is another way for supporters to have some fun this Saturday!

In fact, you can even join in on a special Community Outreach activity (http://screaming-eagles.com/2009/03/its-easy-being-green-shamrockfest-is-coming/) as we enjoy St. Paddy’s Day at 2009 Shamrockfest and raise money for United for DC’s programs (http://unitedfordc.mlsnet.com/united_for_dc/programs/) at the same time.

It is a great way to join in the camaraderie while helping spread the word about the tremendous programs that our team operates in the community.

If you’ve never volunteered for something before, this is a unique opportunity to jump into the fray with fellow DC United fans!!

If you have never heard of Shamrockfest - the event itself is a blast:

The National Shamrock Fest is the largest and most exciting Saint Paddy’s festival on the East Coast featuring more than 50 live bands and DJ’s.

Enjoy a day-long festival of Rock, Irish, Reggae, Retro and Folk music, as well as food, drinks and over a dozen massive party areas spread out over more than 40 acres!

http://screaming-eagles.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/image/SROCK%20volunteers.jpg

We’re working the beer tents in two shifts - each shift includes training from Bud Light as well as a few hours pouring. The first shift is from 12-4:30 PM and the second is from 3-7:30 PM.

So please consider volunteering.

Drop a note to outreach@screaming-eagles.com for more info or to sign up.

Thanks in advance!

I worked at the SE info table last year for this but our volunteers who did the beer pouring had a great time. You compete for tips at your pour station so you can be VERY creative on how you lure people over (our SE ladies team the Nuisance, seen here in the green, did VERY well!!)

Yes, to answer a question that has come up:

You DO have to be over-21 to volunteer for this particular event.

***
Wait a minute? You pour beer in Lot 8 while listening to great bands and as a result kids get to experience a match at RFK - what's not to like?!!

http://unitedfordc.mlsnet.com/united_for_dc/imgs/programs/kicks_for_kids_lg.gif

Pretty simple, really. The more volunteers we get = the more tips = more kids are exposed to the rollicking fun watching Christian Gomez and Ben Olsen in action...

For those of you who are not aware -

Each year, approximately 7,500 disadvantaged youth, families and chaperones come to RFK to watch D.C. United through this program, representing over 125 various organizations. Beneficiaries include: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (Wards 1, 6, 7 and 8), the Coalition for the Homeless/DC Village Shelter (Ward 8), DC Parks and Recreation (All Wards), DC SCORES (All Wards), Horton's Kids (Ward 8), the Latin American Youth Center (Ward 1) and So Others Might Eat (All Wards), Maryland Multicultural Youth Center (PGC), and Langley Park Community Center (PCG).

I had a great time last year even with the confusion. Unfortunately this year it is the same day as the Odyssey of the Mind NOVA East tourney where I will be judging.

It really is a shame because one of my favorite bands is playing again this year.

Alas, if I recall correctly from last year you pay before you get to the beer stands (the volunteers don't handle that cash).

Yep. And beware...they WILL continue to sell beer tickets after they shut off the beer taps - and they WILL NOT refund your money after having sold you said tickets.

Sorry, got a little sidetracked - the whole effort to lobby the state legislators in Maryland put everything else on the back-burner. The last thing I want to see is our team suddenly forced to become St. Louis United!

The folks at Shamrockfest are working on the details relating to parking, etc. and are going to be getting in touch with us with an update once they have hammered all the kinks out.

Just wanted to thank

Stu A.
Matt F.
James P.

for jumping on in! There is still room for others who want to join in the fun :)

Billy F. sorry you can't make it, I will take you off the list and hope to see you at the next one!

Please drop a note directly to outreach@screaming-eagles.com for more info, etc. because I won't be on BS until late this evening.

John,

We have posted this on the website (http://screaming-eagles.com/2009/03/bone-marrow-drive/) and you can absolutely count me in for the day. Looks like I'll be spending the weekend at RFK - something new and unusual ;)

The Williams family saga happens to hit quite close to home as I lost my father, not to the lymphatic cancer that he successfully fought off with the help of the folks at NIH... but the results of the treatment which essentially had the effect of shutting his marrow down.

We were never able to find a match and he ended up on an experimental treatment run out of the MD Anderson clinic in Houston.

As for Saturday's gathering, I wanted to thank

Melanie B.
Hannah H.
Jim S.

for signing up for a shift. If you are interested in volunteering, just drop a note to outreach@screaming-eagles.com

I'm trying to figure out how to keep my hands warm and dry while I pour beer as it's going to be a little chilly on Sat, maybe my glove liners will fit inside a pair of rubber kitchen gloves??

Whatever else you put on your hands, be sure to have wool gloves/mittens. If they get wet, they will still keep your hands warm.

Mrs. Winoman has some wool (ski) mittens that pop open like an old pack of Marlboros, leaving them on, but exposing the fingers when needed. If you can find some like that, you'll be glad you did!

It may not be HB, but it is the closest we could come to at RFK ;)

Thanks to

John F. and Lauren P. for signing up - there is still time left for those on the fence!

Sean B. - you need to tell me which shift you are doing - unless you are joining the hardcore amongst us who are doing both :)

Jacob K. - what is the name of your friend who wants to go on the second shift?

If you signed up already you should have received a note with details from Paul - if you didn't... just shoot me an email at outreach@screaming-eagles.com

Thanks to Aron S. and Nathan M. for jumping into the fray!

To answer a couple of questions that folks had relating to food and parking. The organizers sent this out:

3. Will there be food for volunteers?
If you are volunteering shift 1 light snacks will be provides, water, soda and free VIP tix. Shift 2 will receive light snacks, water, soda, and light food.

4. What is the best way to RFK?
My advice is to take the metro. Please visit our web site for directions. If you drive RFK Stadium will charge $20.

So, if you can, definitely use Metro for this event!
