Since members of the Chivas organization have mentioned that part of the plan for putting an MLS team in San Diego involves drawing fans from Tijuana and other communities right across the border, does anyone know what happened with Chivas Tijuana (http://rds.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=%22Chivas+Tijuana%22/v=2/SID=e/l=WS1/R=1/H=0/*-http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/4734/Chivas_Tijuana/ChivasTijuana.html)?

I understand that they played in the MFL second division and were affiliated with Chivas Guadalajara. Is that right?

How closely affiliated was the Tijuana operation with the parent club - i.e., actual ownership by the big club or just some sort of brand usage arrangement between Chivas Guadalajara and some local Tijuana empresarios?

What came of it?

This was all pre-Vergara, yes?

yes to all your questions!

is called Nacional Tijuana, I think... not chivas Tijuana (the mods, that frequent here so much, can help me answer that)

Vergara is now involved in some changes for saprissa, CR... after last week national convention of Omnilife reps in guadalajara (30thou at hand)

Correct.. Chivas Tj was originally Nacional Tj which is owned by "La promotora" (Investors) which used to manage Club Guadalajara.

Nacional Tj was using the Chivas brand because their owners "La Promotora" managed Club Guadalajara. Other than that there was no connection. Chivas second division affiliate club is Tapatio which is also in Guadalajara..

What came of it?

Nacional Tj got to use Chivas name, uniform and was a feeder team to Guadalajara. Miguel Sabah now at Chivas came from Chivas Tj. Their attendance was also better..

Indeed.. After Vergara bought Club Guadalajara from the original 150 socios and bought out the remainder of La Promotora management contract, La promotora concentrated on Nacional Tj (Chivas Tj) they renamed the Club Trotamundos (Globetrotters) and are building a Stadium in Tijuana and hope to bring first division footy in the near future..

Would fans on the Tj side bother with an MLS Chivas team in SD if they have an MFL first division team?

Maybe Chivas SD could survive anyway if it has enough local non-Mexican support? It would be a remarkable irony if Chivas SD survives because of its gringo fans. :D
