If your a fan of one do you have to hate the other?
It seems many supporters believe you must trash the others in order to be a real fan. I find it hard to cheer against any Canadian team unless they are playing each other. Cant we hate the evil American imperialist empire instead?;)
Columbus, Chicago and New york, are they not more deserving to be loathed?

Spot on here. This is what many hardcore football supporters have a problem with. It's that you should have loyalty to one club and no one else, which can be true for many countries.
Canada is not yet one of them, where we have only three professional clubs. I do believe it's possible to cheer for the other Canadian clubs while maintaining your loyalty to your local club. The success of ANY of the three clubs in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver only raises the profile of Canadian football worldwide, IMHO.
Some may not see it that way, which is fine.

When Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool fans get together for a big love in, I'll consider this proposition.

Who is asking for a "love in?"
I was cheering for Montreal the other night along with about 20 others at the Football Factory but only one of us was an Impact supporter.
A successful Impact would have been good for Canadian soccer.
Now they are the enemy again.

I was glad to see them lose. What's good for Canadian soccer is real rivalries that draw people in, not supporting the enemy. I don't see how a TFC fan rooting on Montreal helps Montreal at all. If 55,000 fans aren't enough to do that, then our help won't make a difference.
As a red blooded TFC fan I would find myself sick to support a team that's my enemy.
Maybe some of you don't remember Montreal jumping around on our turf after the final game of the Voyageurs Cup.
I can't forget that, and just I can't just turn on and off my emotional support at will. If you can, then you haven't developed your allegiance yet. Pity.

That is a ridiculous thing to say.
How could you possibily think that we were rooting for Montreal to help Montreal?
That is one convoluded and twisted leap.
We rooted for Montreal because we wanted to see a Canadian team do well. it is as simple as that.
They are Canadian, I am Canadian.
I will always cheer on a Canadian team in an international competition. As far as I'm concerned, that is part of being a proud Canadian!
Canada is allegiance #1!

All that sounds perfectly normal, I was hoping Toronto FC could have it's own sub-forum on Bigsoccer, same as all the other MLs teams.....:(
Is it too much too ask that if people want to vocally support Montreal or Vancouver, that they do so in the appropriate forum?
i.e. NOT THIS ONE

I've got a solution Mikey. If you don't like it, don't click on it!
This is a TFC related thread. We are discussing supporters of one club occasionally supporting another.
Perhaps you're suggesting another forum be set up for people to discuss things you don't want to discuss? ;)

I completely agree with Blizzard.
I support TFC, but I stayed up and watched the Impact fall apart till midnight and still had to get up at 4:30am to go to work. I would have done the same if it was the Whitecaps playing.
I love soccer and want it to do well in Canada. TFC is part of that, but TFC can't succeed alone.
I will vocally and passionately support TFC when they play another Canadian club, but when another Canadian club represents our country then I will support them. I don't think that this makes me a turn coat or less of a fan. It just means that I am a proud Canadian.

I'm with you 100% on this mikey. This is a TFC forum, and I personally don't give a rats behind how the other Canadian teams are performing. I only support TFC.
If you really care about the Impact or Whitecaps, then create your own sub-forum.

All right, obviously this is becoming a polarizing issue.
That being said, a poll is now up in this topic to gauge where you stand on the issue.

My view is this: there is zero chance that Impact and Whitecaps fans would support TFC in the same situation.
I support Impact and Whitecaps joining MLS, but that's about it.

I here say that your notion of zero percent chance is completely wrong. I understand not ever cheering for a different team from your own country if your team is in the competition. But if your country only has one entry in international competitions I think it transcends club affiliation and become a national pride thing.

We already have a Toronto NSR sub-forum. I have no problem laughing my ass off at Montreal choking, this is the TFC forum after all. I do take exception to other peoples attitude to my amusement at Montreals heartbreak (still grinning).

That's what the CMNT is for. It isn't Canada who are playing in club competition. It is Montreal and Vancouver who have to knock out TFC to get there. Club rivalry kicks in at that point for a lot of people.

Stop throwing the flag in places it doesn't belong. There are no coefficient points there is no sense cheering for a team that lifted a trophy in our stadium especially since they have NEVER beaten us.

I have to take strong exception to your comments. If it pleases you that Montreal lost so be it. I, as a Canadian and proud to be so, was disappointed in the result.
BUT Quebecers are not French anymore than English speaking Canadians are British. Quebecers speak French for historic reasons but they are Canadians not French. Some want to separate from Canada because people such as you want to marginalize them and belittle them.
Our team motto is all for one and one for all. Try that as your country motto.

Ridiculous. Be sure to be "All for One" and Cheer Montreal when they come to BMO since you love them so much.
Club Football has NOTHING to do with Canada. Montreal isn't in THE CANADIAN LEAGUE there is no such thing. It is a market for USL-1. There are No coefficient points in CCL so Canada gains NOTHING with Montreal success or failure.
I, as a Canadian and proudly so, am outraged that you think you can tell people who to cheer for and use the country itself as a pathetic excuse to bandwagon jump.
You want to cheer Montreal knock yourself out but don't you dare throw the flag on top of them, they are not TEAM CANADA learn to separate club from country every other nation in the world has been able to grasp that simple concept.
