I know this has been debated endlessly on other threads but figured it deserved one of its own. What is needed for this season to be considered a successful season. By exstention justify GH keeping his job. Do we need to win the cup, qualify for the champions league, both? or is nothing short of the league a good enough result?

My own ideas are with the amount of injuries and general discombabulation of the season a good cup run and a champions league spot would be a good season not a great one but would hopefully show last season as the valley. But it also sets up next season as a make or break season for GH. Anything short of Europe this season (unless Newcastle just plays lights out for the rest of the year) and we have to be looking for a new manager.

With the exception of making the CL, I don't think the club is viewing this situation as a "he's fired if we don't win this or that", but rather "is there anyone out there to replace him?". Whether we win dick this year or not, sacking Houllier will only be shooting ourselves in the foot if we don't have more confidence in who's replacing him.

I will say, though, that we have to start building on wins and being more consistent. If we don't qualify for the CL at the end of this season, Houllier is going to hard pressed to convince the board to let him stay and continue to see his "vision".

No doubt...I can feel the pressure all the way over here, it's so strong. For the Kop to be booing you while you're beating a team from Manchester means something is amiss.

But it does seem the board are very supportive, which, barring an absolute meltdown, is why I just don't see him leaving prior to the end of this season.

We're in the running for the fourth CL spot, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Cup.

Given the fact that we've played much of the season with half a dozen first-team players injured and unavailable at any given time, if we attained one of these three objectives, I'd be satisfied; if we acheived two I'd be pretty happy; and if all three I'd term this a very successful year.

By extension, if any one of these happens, I bet GH stays.

Utter crap.

Do you remember Souness?

He won't walk during the season. End of story.

If he does go at the end of the season, it's likely to be upstairs in some director of football type postion.

Stop listening to BBC 606 they haven't got a clue on there.

The UEFA Cup and/or FA Cup are a bonus. I think qualifying for the Champions League is the most important objective for this season, and we MUST stop at nothing to ensure we achieve this. If we don't then we'll slip further and further behind the top 3 clubs and we'll be hard pressed keeping some of our top players.

Speaking of which, what's the latest on Michael Owen and whether or not he will re-sign with Liverpool??

Liverpool are buying Auxerre's Cisse in the summer - for a reported cool £14million - if GH is not to be manager of LFC next season why would the board sanction such a large purchase on a manager that they were going to replace?

Any new manager may not rate Cisse, and would have around £14million less to spend on players...

IMHO GH will be LFC manager next season (not just for the above for a variety of reasons - including a full 5 years of his contract - despite whatever rubbish the 24/7 media and press need to spout to keep selling their product.

My reaction was to the "he'll walk out in 10 days post".

I'll say it again, utter crap.
