I split it out from the other thread. Hope you don't mind.
I have been wondering whether to start another "Freddy Adu in The News" thread though. Perhaps all these Freddy articles should go in one place. I don't know. Thoughts?

I don't mind if you don't, just didn't want to add to the clutter. A Freddy news thread is a good idea.

Adu has talent to do it. The highlight of his first practice with United came when he let a pass from Santino Quaranta go between his legs. In one quick stroke, Adu then backheeled the ball with his right foot into the top left corner of the net.
They just showed that goal on Pardon The Interruption. It was pretty sick.

I didn't see it, but my friend said it was the heel (rev spell check) flick goal. If that is the one, it's pretty cool!

In this a.m.'s Post Wilbon has a column about the spoiled reaction of two of the NBA's child wonders to having been left off the all-star team. His point is that what the NBA suffers from are wizz-kids who have never in their lives been told 'no'.
That made me think of the recent Freddy interview where he talked about the chores at home that his mother would make him do.
Thank God for Freddy's mother. From everything I've seen she's done one hell of a job. A big valentine to her.

Gained 15 pounds in 2 months lifting weights. Seems he knows what he's in for. And a sports phsycologist? Maybe he just needs a regular 'kids' shrink to get through the next couple of years.

It was at the very end. They mentioned him because it was the one year anniversary of his US citizenship.
Kornheiser said something like, "A lot has happened to young Freddy in the last year. He got his citizenship, signed a contract with Nike, became the youngest and highest paid player in MLS. [And then jokingly] Now he finally has enough money to get rid of that 1978 Chevy Vega he's been driving around for 15 years."
It's been a long joke on the show that Kornheiser "believes" that Freddy is older than he is, although he seems very much less convinced of it than he used to be. Wilbon has always agreed with the reported age and they use it to argue about it, like they do so many issues on the show.

Lifting weights at 14? I'm not a doctor, but I seem to remember hearing/reading somewhere that weight lifting at a young age can be detrimental/hurtful. Something about the strain on muscles and bones that are not fully mature and developed. Oh well. I'm sure that one of Freddy's doctors is monitoring it closely to make sure he doesn't overdo it and hurt himself. Before you reply and yell at me, remember I'm a Mom - I will always be thinking about the kids' best interest first - I can't help it!!!
