16 spots (no qualifying). Why I believe CONCACAF will reduce it to 16 teams from 24 in the near future? To save money. Look at the attendance between Champions' Cup and Champions League and the number of matches.

2008 Champions' Cup:
8 teams (14 matches total):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACA...ns%27_Cup_2008

Attendance:
22,250
14,348
21,897
23,000
35,846
33,000
6,985
12,394
10,260
23,112
18,642
17,329
22,500
30,000

Champions League (63 matches thus far): 344,421 (5,467 per match)
Assume 6000 x $10 = $60,000 in revenue per match. This is not enough to cover the expense (travel, hotel, salary, stadium rent etc..). I'm 90% confident that CONCACAF will reduce it to 16 teams within 3 years.

Why Mexico 4 and USA 3? To generate revenue that is necessary to pay for this tournament. Most of the ticket, sponsorship and TV revenue come from USA and Mexico.

Allocate 16 CCL spots (assume Mexico gets 4 and USA gets 3)

Mexico 4 spots
USA 3 spots (MLS Cup winner, regular season champ, US Open Cup)
Costa Rica:
CFU Club Championship (Caribbean):
Honduras:
Guatemala:
Canada:
etc...

USL can qualifying through:

Canadian USL: Canadian Championship
Caribbean USL: CFU
American USL: US Open Cup

My allocation:

Mexico 4 spots
USA 3 spots (MLS Cup winner, regular season champ, US Open Cup)
Costa Rica: 2
CFU Club Championship (Caribbean): 2
Honduras: 1
Guatemala: 1
Canada: 1
El Salvador: 1
Panama: 1

By 2011, MLS will have 18 teams. The same number as Mexico.
How many teams are there in the league from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama?

How exactly would taking out a preliminary round totalling 16 games make this tournament magically more profitable? Also, if concacaf was so concerned with saving money as you said why would they be assisting teams financially with travel money for this tournament?

attendence numbers != tournament profitability

Totally ignores advertising revenue and TV rights with FSC.

CONCACAF using Gold Cup profits from huge stadiums in USA = enough money to pay for the expenses of the team so attendance and profitability don't matter, they changed expanded the tournament to try and increase the quality of soccer in the region. They set up a measure in that they stated they will pay for some expenses for the teams to ensure that profitabiity isnt an issue.

And I have this swell bridge in Brooklyn I've been trying to offload. Give you a good price on it...

I don't know how exactly you are trying to insult me, but if you go to concacafs website, to the statutes and regulations for the champions league they clearly state (section 4.4) that they will be assisting the teams with money for travel expenses.

Not that that ever gets me anywhere on the Concacaf forum, but let me try again, with less snark and more logic...

If you think the CCL is a charitable event, you're sadly mistaken. Just because CONCACAF is helping with travel expenses (a pretty common occurrence, btw) does not mean that they don't care about the profitability of the event. The two don't really have much to do with one another. And if you think that the money made on the Gold Cup is going anywhere but into the pockets of the people that run things in Concacaf... well, about that bridge...

The OP was based on the idea that expansion to 24 teams has hurt attendance and thus profitability of the tourney. I just pointed out that attendance does not equal profitability (Orlando pointed out 2 big revenue streams). Your suggestion that the CCL shouldn't be (or isn't!) about profit is, at best, naive.

YouTube - Inside theGold Cup-Dennis' Interview with Jack Warner

Watch this starting at 6:00, Jack Warner talks about how the reason the Gold Cup is every two years is specifically to try and improve the footballing skills of the teams in the region. Also a side note in that interview he says that down the road he would like to get to 16 teams for the Gold Cup.

In this video Jack says "Here we have a champions league that will help elevate our clubs to a higher level of football and by extension improve our national teams "

YouTube - Jack Warner addresses clubs at Champions League Summit

In the next video Jack talks about how concacaf will be covering all the expenses of the teams, as well as how the champions league should improve th Gold Cup because of the quality of play that the players will experience in the Champions league. (start at 7:00)

YouTube - CHAMPIONS CUP FINAL

I'm not trying to say that CONCACAF doesn't want to make money. Just saying that everything that I hear and read from the confederation is them doing things to try and improve the quality of play in the region. Of course they will try and make the CCL profitable, while following the main objective of improving quality of play in the region.

Having said that very few people here seem to take what Jack Warner says at face value which I don't understand as he's doing this to immprove the play of the region; turning the Gold Cup into a viable tournament, expanding the Concacaf Cup to include teams from every country in the region.

Having said that very few people here seem to take what Jack Warner says at face value which I don't understand ...Because he's corrupt, and it's been demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that cash is going directly into his own pocket.
