From an article in USA Today:
The USA will play Honduras Thursday in the third-place game of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Olympic qualifying tournament.
Myernick will have just 15 players, including two goalkeepers, on his roster for the game because Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley and Bobby Convey left Wednesday to join the men's senior team, which is training in Bradenton, Fla., for its game against Netherlands on Feb. 18 in Amsterdam. The U.S. team also will be without defender Nat Borchers, who received his second yellow card in the 74th minute against Mexico and is ineligible tonight.

I'd rather he was training with us.

Me too. But, at least it's early in pre-season. I'm guessing he'll be back with DCU no later than the last week of February (unlesss I'm forgetting about some other USMNT stuff or something). That gives him over a month of pre-season to gel with the team.

Since DC & the US are training in the same place, I imagine Bobby will at least meet with our team during the next few days. It will be important for him to get used to Nowak's system and expectations as soon as possible.

Plus I think we have Freddy for this week only until after he finishes classes so it would be nice to have the 'full' team together for this week at least.

So Casey could get released for this game, but not for the Olympic qualifier? Someone please explain.

I believe the Olympics are a non-FIFA sanctioned event and the game against the Dutch is on an official FIFA designated friendly date. Thus, the club is required to release them for this date.

The Olympics are NOT official FIFA sanctioned games, therefore teams do not need to release players for them nor for qualifiers. FIFA "tolerates" the Olympics only because the teams are limited to players under 23 years old with 3 exceptions and no player that has won a World Cup. FIFA "toleration" means they do not sanction players who play in the Olympics and allow those players to play in FIFA tournaments. Because you can only play for one national team - there is no Great Britain team because then those players would be ineligible for their national FA (i.e. England, Scotland, Wales, and North Ireland).
Yea, I'd prefer that Convey trained with DC United for a bit. But we all know that the Bruce is going to help him get to England this summer by calling him up as much as possible. Good for Bobby but bad for DC United...
