;) [now we have it]

1974

01 Cruyff (Netherlands) 116

03 Deyna (Poland) 35

surprised to see Deyna in front of Lato. Thought Lato was THEIR man at the Wc

By the way, a part from 1972 from a German point of view, 1956 is my favoutite. You can't beat that:

03 Kopa (Poland/France) 33
04 Puskas (Hungary) 32
05 Yashin (USSR) 19
06 Bozsik (Hungary) 15
07 Ocwirk (Austria) 9

Kazimierz Deyna (I love those Polish names) was the influential playmaker of that fancied Poland side, one of the best players of the tournament. Only Cruyff and Beckenbauer were more influential for their teams that year. Without Deyna, Grzegorz Lato and Andrzej Szarmach could not have scored as many goals as they did.

I'm surprised that in 1982, Giresse was rated higher than Platini. What made his performance better than Platini's?

Portugal's appearance really helped Chalana to score well. That guy wasn't that good.

The 1956 list is a great one like Pakalolo pointed out, with Ocwirk undoubtedly the most underrated player of that lot. The 1960 and 1961 lists are impressive also.

How did Platini manage a low ranking in 1982?

Hmm, Keegan was a few points away from winning three in a row...

Keegan was expected to win it in 1977 due to Liverpool's victory in the European Cup and Keegan's instrumental role in that. But he struggled at Hamburg in the first half of the 1977-78 season while at the same time Allan Simonsen played magnificently for Borussia Mönchengladbach. And since the whole year was counting...

It is indeed a bit surprising but if you're looking at the players in front of Platini, it's hard to argue that Platini was better in 1982 than any of them. The Platini of 1982 while great was not the Platini of 1984!

Very interesting.
Platini won three years in a row!! Feel bad for not having heard of some players yet like Belanov for example.

How about 91-till now?

Woohooo! Complete Dutch domination.

Totally. What a year for Dutch football. I really wonder if that (4 out of the top 5) can ever be accomplished again.

And Beckenbauer???? How many years can one person be on that list (66-76)? I had no idea he was so highly rated in the 60's. Stud.

Well there's no limit obviously but a while back I looked into every player that had ever won a point in the EPOTY voting. The people that had the most years were

Cruyff (12), Beckenbauer (11), Eusebio (11), Zidane (11), Rivera (10), Muller (10), Michael Laudrup (10), Paolo Maldini (10), Yashin (9), Sandro Mazzola (9), Platini (9).

This was done before last year's voting so I think Maldini may well be on 11 now as well.

62 > Jurion was not French but Belgian.

Wow, every day a surprise in the ante-Bosman world. A player of AS Nancy Lorraine is 5th of the Ballon d'Or.

I don't know for Giresse  I wasn't born. I think I remember Platini was injured in 1982 and 1986. Was Giresse better than him in the World Cup ? In the Championship, Platini finished 2nd with Saint-Etienne, Giresse 4th, and Platini scored the two goals for les Verts in the final of the French Cup lost against PSG.

Platini scored four goals in 1982 (he was MOTM in the loss against West Germany) and battled a cold or the flu in the early stages of the 1986 World Cup. Even if Platini wasn't at his very best, I can't see how Giresse was better. Mysterious, really.
