Who would people regard as the better all time team, Man U or Liverpool.

On top of this what would you regard as the best all time Man U team and the best Liverpool all time team? Who do you think would on paper win if these two sides were to play?

Man United:

Schmeichel
Neville
Edwards
Ferdinand
Irwin
Best
Charlton
Keane
Giggs
Law
Scholes

------------------Schmeichel-----------------------
Neville------Edwards------Ferdinand-----Irwin
Best--------Keane-------Charlton--------Giggs
-----------------------Scholes-----------------------
-----------------------Law----------------------------

Robson and Cantona could easily replace Keane and Scholes.

LiverpoolL:

Grobbelar
Neal
Hansen
Carragher
Kennedy
Hughes
Gerrard
Barnes
Dalglish
Rush
Fowler

United's team shades it for me.

Can't see Neville making the all time United team. Definitely in the top 3 or 4 all time but not the best, otherwise, pretty good looking team.

as for the initial question, Liverpool historically have the edge. They also have 5 bloody CLs so there is that to consider. Over the last 15+ years United are clearly, cleary the better team, but prior to that the answer would have been Liverpool. I'd say both teams are fairly even.

Liverpool FC is a better club than Man Utd in terms of succeses and hsitory.

But for the all-time team, I think Man Utd is better.

I don't think I can come up with the Best XI . but I can see Man Utd fielding Charton, Law, Giggs, Best, Keane, Edward and Schmeichel for sure. And Liverpool with Rush Souness, Hansen, Barnes and Dalglish. I considered the Man Utd above players better than Liverpool.

If we're talking names wise, and not as a fully functional XI then I'd think the teams would look like this.

Liverpool

------------Grobbelaar
--------Hansen-----Carragher
Neal----------------------Kennedy
-------Gerrard---Souness
Lidell----------------------Barnes
---------------Dalglish
--------Rush

United

-----------Schmeichel
------McGrath------Rio
Carey--------------------Byrne
-----Keane----Edwards
--Best------------------Giggs
---------------Charlton
-----------Law

These XIs are always hard becaue you're always leaving out names. On any other day you could see Clemence, Hyppia or Fowler in there. For United, you could make very compelling cases for Buchan, Robson and C.Ronaldo.

Looking at only the XIs, then its very close. If you were to include a bench for both sides, then I'd think United wins this comfortably.

I tend to agree with you however if you look at consistancy in the league in seasons where they havent won the league I have a feeling overall Liverpool would be ahead (ie: number of times runners up, third & fourth, total time at the top flight, cup finalist, semi's, etc). I havent got fact to back this up but gut feeling Pool would be ahead here. Anyone have numbers on this.

As for Pool top XI does anyone rate McManaman at all???

He was criminally underrated by Liverpool fans. There were some games where their only tactic was to just give it to Macca and hope he created something. However, being part of the Spice Boys, never winning a big trophy and leaving on a free has tainted his reputations (Robbie Fowler was immune from all of this though). Also, the Scousers I know seem to think he could have done more with his talent. So many times he would create a shot for himself only to hit it tamely into the keepers arms.

Also, there is the small matter of better Liverpool wingers in the past vying for a place in the all time XI

With regards to the Neville thing, why not? He has been a superb right back for going on 15 years. Off the top of my head I can't think of another one in your past who has played as well for so long. The only reason I can think to put someone else in is looking back more fondly on past players.
