So my friend got free passes to see a sneak preview of Miracle last night at one of the nicer theaters in Boston. The event was being promoted by a local radio station and was introduced by one of their DJs who played for the Bruins back in the 80s--and also in attendance was his former linemate with the B's and a member of the 1980 US team, Dave Silk.
What can I say but, simply amazing movie. Kurt Russell puts in a stellar performance (according to the radio DJ he is being considered for an Oscar, altho those rarely go to people associated with movies that don't suck) as Coach Brooks, and the players are also very well-portrayed (especially considering that most of them are played by ex-hockey players with little or no acting experience). The guy who plays the assistant coach also puts in a great performance.
The movie, aside from being a Rudy-type flick, does a great job of putting the Miracle on Ice in its geopolitical context--those of you who have scoffed at my assertions in the Politics board that the Miracle on Ice was an important event in the US' Cold War victory (or at least speeding up the eventual victory) will understand better what I'm talking about after seeing the movie.
All in all, a great movie (altho I'm sure some of the BigSoccer NSR board "usual suspects" will criticize it for being jingoistic or something along those lines), definitely a must-see and something I'll be buying when it comes out on DVD.
