So my friend got free passes to see a sneak preview of Miracle last night at one of the nicer theaters in Boston. The event was being promoted by a local radio station and was introduced by one of their DJs who played for the Bruins back in the 80s--and also in attendance was his former linemate with the B's and a member of the 1980 US team, Dave Silk.

What can I say but, simply amazing movie. Kurt Russell puts in a stellar performance (according to the radio DJ he is being considered for an Oscar, altho those rarely go to people associated with movies that don't suck) as Coach Brooks, and the players are also very well-portrayed (especially considering that most of them are played by ex-hockey players with little or no acting experience). The guy who plays the assistant coach also puts in a great performance.

The movie, aside from being a Rudy-type flick, does a great job of putting the Miracle on Ice in its geopolitical context--those of you who have scoffed at my assertions in the Politics board that the Miracle on Ice was an important event in the US' Cold War victory (or at least speeding up the eventual victory) will understand better what I'm talking about after seeing the movie.

All in all, a great movie (altho I'm sure some of the BigSoccer NSR board "usual suspects" will criticize it for being jingoistic or something along those lines), definitely a must-see and something I'll be buying when it comes out on DVD.

LOL, the Oscars.... you do know that they're at the end of the month right. The nominations have already been announced. It's WAAAAAY too early to start Oscar considerations for 2005.

This movie looks like it's too much of a rah-rah, go USA movie. I guess the people who don't like it will be considered unpatriotic.

The movie looks good. I have a soft spot for sports movies like these.

I remember watching an HBO documentary on the USA national hockey team's road to victory over the Soviet Union a while back and found it very compelling.

There were in-fighting amongst the players, interesting backgrounds on each of hte players who were from small towns, egos that needed to be checked at the door, and the whole deal with the Russians as the unintimidateable beasts they were portrayed as were all dramatic stuff. Hopefully, the movie is just as engaging as that documentary.

Besides, I think Kurt Russell is like Jeff Bridges. Both are amazing actors who just can't seem to get a break.

For what it's worth, it currently has a 70% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Miracle-1129610/), which is pretty damn good for a movie released this time of the year.

Good to know its a well-made movie. I think I'll have to check it out, since I really like sports movies.

Fantastic movie.

It has been extremely well received here in Minnesota. I went at 10:40 last night and the theater was still packed. People clapping and cheering and crying...

Well everyone has their reasons.

I just saw this movie, theater was sold out,so I guess it'll be doing good at the Box Office.
Great movie, just classic stuff, something everyone should see.
I'll be getting this one on DVD also.

Crying can also mean, people got teary-eyed or welled up.

I'll admit to having gotten teary-eyed in a lot of movies.

Movies like this makes me well up with tears. This happened after I watched Brian's Song.

More and more, I'm wanting to see Miracle.

Well he is in Minnesota. :)

Saw it yesterday, my GF dragged me to it if you can believe that. Liked it. If I had been less grumpy about seeing it in the first place I think I would really have enjoyed it.
