I lived in Berlin last year and enjoyed it. I never joined a supporters group but I probably should've.
Union is a more working class club, especially due to it's location. I never saw anything that suggested socialism or anything like that, but I imagine it's there. The walk to the Union stadium is something else. It's like walking through the forest for awhile to get into the stadium. There was a small riot when I was there during the Spring against Rot-Weiss Ahlen (I think it was). I liked Hertha and keep up with the team, but Union is always my neighborhood club. Hope to see a regular derby next year.
Thanks for the info! I obviously like Hertha a lot, but Union seems like a pretty interesting club as well. I'll be living in South Berlin (near Osdorfer Strasse S-Bahn station), which puts me near the geographic center between the two clubs. I wanted to hit the ground running with the supporters clubs, but I think that I'll check out both atmospheres before putting time and energy towards one or the other. Hertha as the flagship club of Berlin is appealing, but I also like the kult aspect of Union...it'll be interesting to see the contrast.
