I hear Gooch has his heart set on England. But, if Hertha really were to get interested in Gooch, they could always get Tony Sanneh to talk to him.
I think Friedrich and Gooch would be a great team in the center.

I'll be living in Berlin from August until April of this coming year and was wondering if someone could describe the relationship between Hertha BSC and Union Berlin. Is it even acceptable to support both?
Secondly, I'm considering getting involved in the supporters scene for Hertha, is there anything I should know about that?
Lastly, are there political concerns that I should be aware of for either Hertha or Union (like extreme-right or extreme-left)?
*I decided to ask about Union on this thread since I don't think one exists and I figured Hertha fans would likely know.
Thanks

Simunic went to Hoffenheim for his buyout clause price of 7M Euros.
Good for you guys. I think Rangnick is going to be bitterly disappointed.

Quickly answer by paragraph (already a bit late for work) :D
1. Its fine. I know a few who do.
2. Go onto hertha-inside.de and register for the forum. There's an English section and a few of the supporters can point you out. The biggest fanscene for Hertha is Harlekins Berlin.
3. Hertha, no. Union are a bit left-sided, but both sets of fans are great.

I wonder if this means we're going to get Dino Drpic.

I was going to answer 1 and 3 the same way, but reading this reminds me that it was you who cleared it up for me too!! :D

Man, I hope not. Not unless they just don't want to spend any of that money.

Then again, they did buy Janker from 1899 and SvB did play a very good 2nd half of the season. It seems that as long as he doesn't play against Luca Toni, he'll have a solid game, and since Luca is leaving :D
Would like to see that money spent on a bonafide striker. 7 million + whatever we've got left in the kitty should go a long ways, plus if theres money left over, we can still buy a winger and all-round defender.

There's nothing concrete on Toni going anywhere, but I agree with you.
Right now, he's giving the "company line" bullcrap about staying and "fighting for his place."
He became third choice the day they signed Gomez and he knows it.
Hell, if Toni wasn't going to go back to Italy, I'd say he's the one you guys should go for.

I was going to laugh at that, but hell, make BVB a 6-8M offer for Alexander Frei.
Frei is worth more, but he's also out of contract at the end of next season and probably won't extend.
Swiss coach, Swiss captain and Raffael a former Swiss League star. Hmmmm......
Sure it would hurt my club in the short run, but it makes sense too.
At least to me.

+ Steve von Bergen, Harald Gamperle (the assistant), Fabian Lustenberger
Would favor a bit younger striker, but Frei can still definitely bring it.

There's a rumor at Transfermarkt.de linking you guys with Christoph Metzelder.
The rumor says the transfer fee would be 4M Euros.
I see that many of the Hertha fans there hoping the rumor is true.
I mentioned Metzelder as someone Hoffenheim should have gone for instead of paying 7M for Simunic.
Why? Because Hoffenheim has enough young players for good backup.
However, I don't know if you guys should take this chance.
Don't get me wrong, I love Christoph Metzelder. He's still a BVB icon and I'll never forget how nice he was to take the time out to talk to me back in 2002-2003.
BUT........
As far as durability, he's about as durable as a paper plate in a dishwasher.........

I also think he doesn't complement Friedrich well.
He's not going to be dominant in the air, and neither will Friedrich.
I also heard that Schalke are interested in him  That would be devastating.

Why is Friedrich still being played in the center? I'm sorry, I think he's a much better right back than he is a center back.

Well, he had a stint on Schalke's youth teams before he joined us, so no, it wouldn't really be "devastating". I'm sure quite a few BVB fans would make more out of it than necessary, but "devastating?" No.
You're being just a bit dramatic dude.
However, I also think he wouldn't do that to the fans who would make more of it than necessary if he has another viable option.
Steffen Freund is another wildly popular former BVB player who had a stint with Schalke as a youth first too.
Also, Jens Lehmann joining BVB didn't do that much to his standing at Schalke. Sure, some of them hated him just like many BVB fans hated him. But in the end, he's still welcomed there.
Andreas Moeller left us and joined "them". It wasn't "devastating" and Moeller meant more to us than Metzelder did.
Hell, even former Schalke boss Rudi Assauer played for both clubs.
Again, I think you're being a bit over-dramatic man.

Didn't know about Metzelder's link with Schalke to be honest.
However, I think you're quite wrong about Friedrich, I think he's terrific at center back. Surely its no coincidence that when Friedrich moved to the center we became so difficult to break down last year. He's not good enough offensively to ever be as good a RB as he is a CB.

I know you didn't. That's why I told you.

Dude, I didn't say Friedrich sucks did I? I said I think he's a much better right back than center back.
As far as when you guys became "difficult to break down", I don't think you can credit that to one guy.
What's ironic is that most I know credited Simunic's play for it. However, I told them the same thing. You can't just credit one guy. They have to be effective together.
Maybe this season I'll see what you see in Friedrich at center back. I'm in no way saying he sucks, but I don't see him as "terrific" either.
Or maybe when you say "terrific", you mean what I say when I say a guy is "pretty good". :D

I lived in Berlin last year and enjoyed it. I never joined a supporters group but I probably should've.
Union is a more working class club, especially due to it's location. I never saw anything that suggested socialism or anything like that, but I imagine it's there. The walk to the Union stadium is something else. It's like walking through the forest for awhile to get into the stadium. There was a small riot when I was there during the Spring against Rot-Weiss Ahlen (I think it was). I liked Hertha and keep up with the team, but Union is always my neighborhood club. Hope to see a regular derby next year.
