Riding Soundtracks: What's in your MP3 player?

Vivaldi, huh? I'm always searching for just the right music for my rides. This morning was Radiohead's OK Computer but I've discovered that Led Zeppelin is still the best music for my commutes.

I never use my ipod for my commute as things have gotten sketchy enough in Austin without the added distraction. I'll use my ipod when I go out to the Veloway to spin since it's closed off to motorized traffic and also here in my subdivision while doing repeats since it's undeveloped and not seeing any construction.

I'm not sure about Radiohead, as Thom York would force me to drive into on coming traffic:D An album I've found to be inspiring on the bike is the original Three Tenors album. Something about opera and bikes is a match made in heaven.

If you really want a surreal experience, listen to Carl Orff "O Fortuna" when it is dark and riding though a questionalbe part of town. That will get the legs moving.

On my way to work, which is mostly uphill, I like something with a little drive to it, like Zeppelin, to get the legs moving. On my way home, which is mostly downhill and often at night, I often go with some groovier jams or jazz.

Oddly enough Led Zeppelin's legendary live album, The Song Remains the Same, fulfills both needs.

Sometimes I do something totally crazy and listen to podcasts.

The Rocky soundtrack and some power ballads are usually what I listen to when on a ride. Also have have some music from a few films like Gladiator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Forrest Gump.

On the stationary bike...it's a bunch of varied artists and podcasts.

On the road, it is varied artists...pretty much every genre from the 1790's - 1990's :D

When the bikes on the trainer I'll usually slap on some aero bars and play video games. The position ends up being pretty comfortable. It's also about the only place I'll listen to Pink Floyd anymore....go figure:confused:

Hey, that's a great idea for the aero bars. :)

When I am on the trainer at home, as opposed to the stationary at the gym, I will watch some dvds.

I try to do that too, except my trainer is so loud that I usually can't hear the tv properly. Instead I have to stick to podcasts and audiobooks.

Huh. If I'm riding thru a questionable area of town my ears are bare. I want to hear what's behind me as well as see what's in front of me.

Plenty of stuff on my MP3 player and my phone (I bit the bullet and got a minor-league upgrade to a Samsung Juke and Rhapsody account). Since then, I've found a bunch of David Newman (RIP) and Ahmad Jamal Trio stuff that my folks have on vinyl, a bunch of Pat Metheny, Depeche Mode and Michael Hedges. That's in addition to the classic rock and R&B that I already have. But when I ride? 70s pop and rock and R&B and 80s non-hair band rock, baby...
