View Full Version : Marquez apology?
Steven Goff in the Wash Post mentioned that Marquez apologized for his challenge on Tim Howard, but there was no actual quotes in Goff's article. Does anyone have a link (preferably, transflated into English, as I took only 7 years of high school and college Spanish and got all A's in those classes yet still cannot hardly speak or read proficiently)?

In one of the postgame threads on the Mexican board, they did have a quote, but I doubt i'll be able to find it now since the thread is 30+ pages.
But, as I recall, he did not apologize to Howard for it, rather he apologized to his teammates for putting them in that situation.

I did like Howard's response... Just shook it off and basically saying sometimes you have to take one for the team.

Marquez Apologizes For His "Error" (http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=goal_marquez_apologizes_for&prov=goal&type=lgns)
"My intentions to be here in this press conference is to ask for public forgiveness," Marquez said. "I've already asked the same from my teammates, the coaching staff and the federation and now I want to apologize publicly to my fans, my country and the media for my conduct… I made an error and threw away all the hard work we had put in all week."
"It always happens were with the national team. My desire always is to win and perhaps when we don't, I don't know what to do and that is what causes me to do this."
"I will put forth my best desire to try and control my intense desire I have to win and the type of desperation I feel."

I love how these days, it's considered admirable to apologize to a non-involved third party. What he did was wrong Tim Howard and a man apologizes to the person who they wronged. A coward apologizes to his fans.

I agree, but the apology represents his feelings exactly.
He let down his team and his fans...he feels sorry about it. Its kind of like the kid who gets caught in the cookie jar. He isn't upset he did it, he's upset he got caught.
He doesn't give two craps about Howard and would take him out again in a second if he thought he could get away with it.
At least he isn't lying by saying he is sorry to Howard...he clearly isn't.

The code of Ardido forbids it.
I wish I'd known about Ardido back when i was throwing tantrums.
I wouldn't've spent so much time in time out.

I don't understand why Marquez should apologize to Howard. Straight red cards are not exactly a rarity, and if I'm not mistaken in virtually every instance the offender just departs the field. I never hear reports of the offender then publicly apologizing to the offendee, unless it's a serious injury that puts a player out of commission and/or threatens to ruin a player's career. I also don't think that Marquez purposely tried to hurt Howard. I just think that in the heat of battle he suffered an unfortunate lapse in thinking, a brain fart, if you will.

Well, he didn't really do much harm to Howard. Had he injured him then yes, an apology to Howard would make more sense, but the people he really harmed were his coaches, teammates, and all the people in Mexico watching this game hoping they could pull out a win against us.
I wouldn't call it admirable any more than ARod admitting to juicing, but I think he addressed the right people.

marquez is trying to avoid a multiple game suspension...
if fifa determines this was some deliberate attempt to injure, marquez might get a 3 game ban...
if it had been a player who sucker punched hejduk, that player might be out for the rest of the hex

I agree about the apology to Howard, it's uneccessary and completely out of character. What is fascinating is his apology.

No matter what the Mexicans said before the match, the bravado, the confidence, the level headedness... it is all a lie. The USMNT is in their heads in a bad way. He admits that he thought the game was already lost and the kick was his answer. "don't know what to do" "the desparation I feel" WOW! This great stuff for the USMNT Staff and going forward, it'll be the gift that keeps giving. Building up to the next USMNT v FMF match played, the Mexican memory will be of an unfair sending off, a missed PK call, lucky goals... but deep in their minds will be the despair. The poor fellows.

Error
-mistake: a wrong action attributable to bad judgment or ignorance or inattention; "he made a bad mistake"; "she was quick to point out my errors ...
-erroneousness: inadvertent incorrectness
-openly attack a GK with cleats out because of frustration.

I think he'll get a 2-game suspension.
That's what Vela got for taking a cynical whack at a Honduran in Mexico's previous game.

****************Not apologizing for Marquez****************************
I was at the game near the endline and needed the youtube replay because I was partially obstructed by the way the play went down. Initially it didn't look like a foul but after scouring youtube, I saw the foul. (we were on the opposite side of his kick which Howard received) .
I do recall just as the scuffle was dying down that Marquez made a half-heartened attempt to apologize to Howard and Tim just shrugged him off. In the heat of battle Marquez lost his cool and then after the incident realised what he just just did to his team, country and coaching staff.
I hate to say it but Rafa is classy when he plays for Barca. When it comes to the US, he and other Mexican players just lose it. We are definitely in their heads. Witness the last ten minutes where I saw at least 3 us players go flying from cynical tackles Mexico made. Jozy was hit pretty hard and landon looks like he took one in the jaw just before that.
If Rafa is sincere about apologise re: trying to injure Howard, only Rafa knows.
