I came across this arena on stadionwelt.de and thought some people might be interested in what AEG does overseas...

So, will the arena just be used for hockey and concerts/meetings or basketball as well. I checked out the link, but my German is, how do you say, inelegant :-).

This means the DEL has some great venues. Cologne, Nuremberg, Hannover, now Berlin.

For those of you who might not know, Hannover's hockey team is named after the greatest band ever.

It says it will be a multifunctional venue for music, entertainment and sports events. I guess that could include basketball...

PS: nice sig :D

Is that going to be their national hockey/basketball arena?

I don't know, but the newly built Kölnarena (18,500) is very nice as well:

It is nice. I've been there many times. Been to dozens of Kölner Haie games and also saw Kiss, the Scorpions and Aerosmith there.

The only thing is, the amenities are so good and you get so comfortable there that the atmosphere kind of suffers (at least for hockey). I only went to one game at the old place (Lentstraße), which was a dingy little building. But it was so damn cold in there that you had to jump around and make noise just to keep warm!

Fun fact: I was part of the largest crowd ever to witness an indoor event in Europe, which IIRC was one of the Kölner Haie playoff games.

I live about 2.000 meters away from the place where Anschutz wants to build this new arena.

The "Berliner Eisbären" will move to this new venue. At the moment they play in the "Wellblechpalast" in Hohenschönhausen at the north-eastern border of Berlin.

I guess that Berlin's top basketball team "Alba Berlin" will stay at the "Max-Schmeling-Halle" as it is pretty new (and for being pretty new it is pretty crappy). Not sure about that as it would be easier to serve corporate and hospitality services at the new venue.

Btw, the Anschutz arena is next to one of Berlin's biggest railway stations ("Ostbahnhof").

How about Preußen Berlin (I much prefer that name to the goofy wannabe American name they have now) - are they staying put?

I guess the Berlin Capitals, former Preußen Berlin, stay in the "Deutschlandhalle" which is part of the International Congress Centre and located in former "West Berlin".

At all the Caps have once again big money problems and are facing administration. So maybe there won't be the question whether they move or not.

Btw, icehockey in Germany is booming. Not yet on TV but the attendances are increasing as new arenas in Cologne (KölnArena, 16.000), Hamburg (Color Line Arena, 13.000) and some other cities have been build.

(edit: Anschutz owns 100% of the Berlin Eisbären and 70% of the Hamburg Freezers plus he builds the new Arena in Berlin. Two pics of the "Wellblechpalast (http://www.hockeyarenas.com/fotosberlin.htm)")

Didn't the KölnArena host the final of the hockey world championships a couple of years ago?

Interesting, I guess that means the DEL will soon start to rival our league. As of right now, the Swiss Nationalliga A has the highest salaries outside of the NHL. SC Bern also has the highest average attendance in all of europe (something like 14,000.)

Yes, I think you're right, but for some reason I didn't go to any of the games. If it was after 2001 I was no longer living there, so I guess that would be the reason.

I always figured Germany had the biggest league in Europe (not saying you're wrong, just that that's what I was led to believe while living there). I really do not think it's productive that none of the games are on free TV. Imagine if all the MLS games were on pay-per-view only. Then no one would get to see them. But the DEL is a pretty exciting league, and you would think it would behoove them to get that message out to as many people as possible.
