..will they qualify for the next Champions League as defending champion, leaving England's 4 official slots with 4 other clubs? This would mean the race for 5th place could be the race for the final Champions league slot.
Thanks in advance if anyone can clarify this for me.

If the team who won it finished 5th then they would have 5 teams (as I believe happened when Real Madrid won in 1998), but if the team who won the CL finished in the top 4 then no extra place would be given to England.

In this case (a club from a country with 4 CL spots), the top 3 besides the CL winner would qualify, the next team would go to the UEFA Cup.

I don`t think the CL winners automatically requalify for the next years competition.

The champions automatically qualifies for next season's competition. Every FA can get a maximum of 4 starters.
-If an English CL winner ends on first or second spot nothing happens.
-If an English CL winner ends on third or fourth spot there will be 3 direct starters and only one team goes to the qualifying round.
-If an English CL winner ends up on fifth or lower 1th, 2nd and CL winner go directly to the next CL and only the third to the qualifying round

Here's a hypothetical. If Newcastle would have won the Champions League this season, and Liverpool finished 4th in the league with Newcastle 5th. Are you saying that Liverpool would not quailfy for the Champions League? This is a big "IF" but its just for arguments sake.

If an English club wins the Champions League... ... you'll be sick of hearing about it a week after the final, and still sick of hearing about it a decade after the final... :D
