At least one can say he is confident about his abilities:

"Keough's corner
St. Lousian Ty Keough has served as an analyst on Major Soccer League telecasts for the past eight seasons, has worked in that capacity on TV coverage of four World Cup tournaments and has broadcast many other soccer games. But his assignments for ESPN and ABC have decreased in favor of players who have retired more recently, and he is not sure if he will be back for what would be his ninth season of broadcasting the MLS when the league begins play in April.
"I believe my work - due to my experience - is at a different level than theirs is," said Keough, 47. "But I don't begrudge the fact they are getting a chance. I was given a chance coming off the field, too."

Not a higher one, but a different one.

Yeah. Ala Seamus Malin. In all honsety, I'd like to see the broadcast wean it's way off of analysts and feature the call of only a single commentator, similar to Sky Sports' Alan Parry or Steve Banyard. These are guys who are entirely in sync with the game at all times, and who's delivery would be absolutely wrecked with Ty sitting along side. What the sport needs are Gary Thorne type announcers whose call continuously reflects the flow and frequent changes of intensity of the match.

Bingo. I can't say I'm a fan of Keoguh's, but with TV commentary - pbp guys and commentators are there only to accompany the screen, but look at the best ones that's all they do...
kinda of like "they're getting warmer, they're getting warm, people are sweating, oh! we're scorched."

I disagree....It might be because I come from South America and the announcer's style is different...But for example, today i wanted to follow Fulham vs. Tottenham, as there are 3 US players in it..After five minutes of listening to the audio link i turn it off, because it lacks any excitement whatsoever (maybe it is this particular announcer, I do not know)...I find myself much happier following the game using the Yanks Abroad thread, since the only thing that could beat it in my mind (TV) is not available....
BTW, if Jorge Ramos (don't know if you guys have heard of him/know who he is) spoke fluent English, I'd take him over any announcer in the country for English play by play, whether on radio or TV. Just my opinion....

First off, with very rare exceptions, games on TV being broadcast with a one-man booth is very rare in this country, in any sport.
It wasn't always this way but it has been for about 30 years, at least.
Even in radio, which still has some solo booths, its becoming less and less common in this country.
Second, even if MLS were to go to a solo announcer, there are very few qualifed Americans who could do it. To do it solo you have to really know the game and have a very listener-friendly personality. I don't think many of those exist.
The reality is that MLS and US national team broadcasts are going to have a two-man booth (at least).
The question, in terms of this thread, is who the analyst should be. It sounds like Ty knows guys like Harkes, Waldo, Balboa are going to be the preference of the folks at SUM/MLS/ESPN and Ty is feeling a need to speak up for himself.
Personally, I think Ty is bad for the game because not only does he not compell you to keep listening because he offers little to nothing in the way of insight, he turns viewers off by being so damn annoying and, quite often, wrong.

For MLS and National team telecasts, there will be at least a 2 man booth. I actually enjoyed the three man thing on Soccer Saturdays with Waldo on the sidelines.
I really like Rob Stone and I think he's the best PBP guy for Nats games. I think the guy that has the best ability in the booth is Harkes. The question is, whether Fox, who he works for on MLS wrap, would let him do telecasts on ESPN or ABC for Nats games. If not, I think Waldo is probably the next best and Cello is probably suited best for sideline work.
Just my opinion.

Spot on.
While (in my opinion) Waldo is annoying. Ty is both annoying and wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
The one I'd love to see is Tommy Stone. He as a little rough during WWC 03, but man he made the broadcast interesting and exciting.

Why not Seamus? Or even better: exhume his partner:
"Cosmos SOC-CERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!"
That guy, whoever he is.

No wonder Ty is so mediocre-to-outright bad: he's arrogant to boot, and probably sees no need to explore ways to improve.
Not a good combination.

The american way is to have one person talking about the game and one ex-player who can talk about it from experience

ROB STONE: Whoop! Boom! 1-0 US!
RAY HUDSON: Oh, what a sweet spell Bobby Convey cast on the goalkeeper, lulling him to sleep before plunging the dagger into his heart!

Word has it that Hudson doesn't want to go into the booth, he wants another coaching job.
