Remember back in 1997-1999 (or 2000? I forget the details), that guy Lionel Bienvenue used to host 2 hour shows on FoxSportsNet covering all of EPL action for the week? Anyone knows where he went? Could they bring him back to do MLS Wrap on FSW? Or is he busy doing some other American sports these days?

I know he wasn't liked all that much by many people, but his show was pretty popular. Remember the Bradford City "Windass" jokes? :)

There's another thread on this (on the FSW board, I think). He's the main sports anchor for Denver's ABC affiliate. Still gets e-mails about the EPL show and apparently does an EPL roundup on his Tuesday night sportscast. The EPL show was probably dropped because only FSNY and MSG (both in NYC) could really justify airing it in terms of viewers and ads sold, and TWI was going to offer both magazine and highlights shows under the new international TV deal signed at that time, which would be much cheaper for FSW to air (no production costs incurred).

I sent Lionel an e-mail and got a very nice reply. It sounds like he's doing well. I think he appreciates hearing from fans of his old show.

He's still in Denver at that link above. Good for him. He's married with kids and settled down... always liked that guy.

He's a sportscaster out here. He always trys to slip soccer news in when he can. I knoe people that have met him and he's still a soccer fan and a great guy. Thouh I wish he would actueally report more soccer, but the Broncos run this town.

I actually e-mailed him and very nicely he gave me a reply...

Chris, thanks for the e-mail.

Very flattering! I’d still be doing that damn show if Fox would not have shut it down. It’s all Max Bretos’ fault!

Yea, that guitar riff. They sometimes use it on the FSC soccer soap opera “Dream Team” (a personal favorite.)

As a matter of fact, I still show EPL highlights here in Denver and show the table. I always put Harcester United on top of the table just for a goof.

Thanks again and take care,

Lionel Bienvenu

Hey Lionel,

I just want to say how much I enjoyed your EPL review show. I was living Boston when it was on and remember during the Rams-Titans Super Bowl, I attended a party and snuck out to the bedroom to watch your show and about 10 minutes later half tof the party was with me watching.

Well, good luck with your life. I just wanted to let you know how much that show meant to me and to tell you I have never been able to get that guitar riff which opened your show out of my head!

Sincerely,
Chris Britt

Good to hear he's doing well, he was the presenter when I started watching EPL shows in the US and a good presenter he was too.

He brought humor and a good level of soccer knowledge to his broadcasts. Kind of like Max Bretos, but with humor and a good level of soccer knowledge and less smugness.

That's funny, because I had emailed him a few months back as well. And he wrote back saying he loved his current job and he couldnt believe people like me remembered him.

I love the new FSC but man sometimes I get nostalgic about the good ol days of Fox Sports World.
