Here's the Evidence;
1. Joy Division, Magazine and the Buzzcocks grew up listening to The Velvet Underground and New York Dolls.
2. New Order's 'Blue Monday' was produced by New York Hip-Hop producer Arthur Baker.
3. Happy Mondays went to New York and were exposed to Harder Drugs.
4. Interpol, a New York band who sound like Joy Division.
5. The Strokes are good friends of Oasis.

I thought "Confusion" was the first single that Arthur Baker did for them...I could be wrong, though.

The music scene in NewYork helped them develop their new style/direction away from Joy Division to what we know as NewOrder - synths, dance beats.

Totally, but that's not the question. I'm not trying to prove anything or anyone wrong, I asked for trivia's sake...

Blue Monday (FAC 73, for Factory trainspotters) was released in March 83, Confusion (FAC 93) came out the following August.
I don't think Baker produced the original Blue Monday though, did he? I know he worked on later remixes & re-recordings of the song...I'm pretty sure Confusion was the first New Order/Baker project.
