my mind is clouded with other stuff... who else needs a coach?
Wolfsburg got Veh, who I didn't want anyway.
Gladbach - did they pick Frontzek (crappy anyway)?
Who else?

That we'll sign a great coach? Well odds are not in our favor, but didn't Klopp agree to terms last year before Daum re-signed?
Who is the next Klopp?
No one says anything, but I believe BVB had Klopp signed as early as German Cup weekend last season.
And remember, because of Euro 2008, last season's German Cup Final was nearly a month before the season ended.
Oh, and Eddie, Klopp turned down Leverkusen to join us. What makes you think he would have picked Koln over us?
Coaches like Klopp, Daum, Rangnick and Magath don't grow on trees. If they did, everyone would have one.
That's why you see coaches who the press always love to brand "The Next Great One" fall by the wayside on a consistent basis.
This season's "big two" were Klinsmann and Labbadia.
With Klinsmann, I think he never got the backing he needed from management and never had the respect of his team.
With Labbadia, I think the press was so busy trying to find that next "Great One", they rushed to label Labbadia a "great coach" just because Leverkusen got off to a fast start when all Labbadia had to do was not f#ck up what Michael Skibbe started the season before.
And guess what? Eventually, Labbadia f#cked it up........
Thomas Doll and his best buddy Thomas von Heesen were also in this "Next Great One" category, only for both to move to new clubs and show neither one could coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
I am guessing you'll say what most people I talk to over here say when I criticize Labbadia. "Well, Labbadia got Leverkusen to the German Cup Final. "
I always say to them, "Thomas Doll got Borussia Dortmund to the German Cup Final last season too. BVB fired him, got Klopp and finished seven places and 19 points higher than the season before while Thomas Doll is still out of work."
What makes me laugh out loud is that Labbadia still being touted for other jobs should Bayer fire him. Which I think they should. He had a much better Bayer team than Michael Skibbe had last season, yet finished two places and two points lower than Skibbe did.
There's the name of a person I think Koln would be smart to consider. Michael Skibbe.
I think he's one of the most underrated coaches out there.
Skibbe and Meier also worked together at BVB.
You ask who the "next Klopp" is out there?
I don't know. But if you ask me who I think the next good up and coming AVAILABLE coach will be if he gets a shot, I would have to say it is one of the guys 1860 fired this past season.
Uwe Wolf.
Another guy I think is going to be a fantastic coach in the near future even though he got fired by a now-relegated 2nd Bundesliga club is former Bayern player Thorsten Fink.
In the next couple of seasons, I'd also look for former Hertha and 1860 coach Falko Götz to reappear at the top level.
Many people are "high" on SC Freiburg coach Robin Dutt, but as far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on him.
I think he had enough firepower to get SCF back to the Bundesliga last season, but didn't get the job done.
As far as I am concerned, the jury is also still out on is Stuttgart's Markus Babbel. Let's see how he does next season without Gomez in the middle to save the team every second week.
Babbel would be my top response to the question "Who's going to be the next Klopp?"
But again, let's see him do it without his superstar next season.
Once again:
"Next Klopp": Babbel is the best possibility in my eyes.
"Who Koln Should Look At": IMO, Skibbe, Funkel and you guys will think I'm crazy, but even a possible return of Uwe Rapolder.
I heard Holger Stanislawski's (St. Pauli coach) name thrown in with the Gladbach position, but I wouldn't hire him. I think like Doll and possibly Thomas Schaaf, Stanislawski can only be an effective coach at HIS CLUB because he'll always have the backing of the management and that mainly because he'll always have the backing of the fans.
I would avoid him.

good post Keith.
Skibbe has potential. He's had a rough go and will have learned from his mistakes.
Time for the dentist - gotta run.

well now that Gladbach has a new coach
HSV, Leverkusen (supposedly), Frankfurt, Cottbus, Bielefeld
Bayern, Schalke, Wolfburg already have new ones.
Certainly a lot of coach changes this summer.

Funkel has absolutely no lobby here, three losses in a row and he is as good as fired
about Rapolder, yes I think you are crazy
We had a lot of coaches here but Rapolder is by far the most hated here.
With the quality of the team he had, Rapolder probably had one of the best shots(of any FC coaches in the last years) at staying in the first league. Still he messed up and he messed up badly.
His behavious was sometimes borderline schizophrenic ( he supposedly had an alcohol problem when he was our coach) and when things got tough he hid behind a 20 year old.
I never want to see Rapolder even near the Geißbockheim again.
When it comes to former FC trainers, Koller is propably one I would like to see again. He never got a real chance here and has shown in Bochum that he can keep a team in the league.
I liked Latour too, and some things he was critisized for (like signing Nova for 1,5Mio) worked quite well in the end. However he is too old now, to make the structural changes we need to permanently stay in the first division.

If you listen to the media, they've all but put Ulf Kirsten into the Cottbus job.
Skibbe has been linked with Frankfurt, Bielefeld and HSV.
Funkel has been linked with Kaiserslautern and Bielefeld.
I think Leverkusen is going to stick with Labbadia to try to prove they were right to hire him in the first place.
Skibbe isn`t even here yet and fans are already bad mouthing him (*cough* including me)
I'm certain that little bit of "information" and five dollars will get me a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Finally, some useful information. That was something I didn't know before making my comments. Thanks!

But you aren't trying to keep a team in the league, you're trying to take the next step, aren't you???

The coach shouldn't be making those changes anyhow, Meier should......

I
But you aren't trying to keep a team in the league, you're trying to take the next step, aren't you???
The second year is just as hard as the first year and now without Daum it will become a lot harder.
There are so many clubs that thought they were finally safe only to step back into the elevator.
I am thinking of Gladbach, Nürnberg, Lautern
we need to stay in the league at least 5 years in a row before we can even consider looking upwards instead of downwards.
or wait? was that a joke?
you know despite our reputation the majority of the FC fans does not belive that we will play in the UEFA cup within the nex 5 years
They blieve that we will play in the CL
you are certainly quite snarky today
The coach shouldn't be making those changes anyhow, Meier should......
But it was exactly what Daum did and it was what made him so important to us.
He installed a new scouting system, he reconstructed our medical department.
We don`t just need a trainer. We need someone with a vision, with a concept
that brings us forward in the long term. A Rangnik/Magath clone propably would work best.
:( And yes I do realize that there is little to no chance to find a guy like that.
Unless ...............there is a mad scientist among the FC fans

:D Hey I could be your assistant.
I have many past credentials. I have won at least 10 Meisterschaften with the FC at Anstoss 3 and that in the ultra violence mode.
With you beeing Meister of the big soccer kicker management pro league last year, we are a nearly unbeatable duo

Exactly, and this year I was too busy to pay attention to Kicker.
Seriously, Meier should know who I am. They need some changes and I'm the guy to bring them.

Well Skibbe is out
He told Meier that he was not interested
but there are some new names.
Morton Olsen ( imo doubtful I don`t think that he will quit his job so close to the
WC. Also Overath said that there won`t be any old faces)
Christian Groß (because we had so much luck with swiss coaches and the media just seems to love them. I can already see the "Swiss cheese" headlines) Also he seems to be connected to every club
Falko Götz (why not? Better than other candidates)

the funny thing is the first time the FC hired Meier is happened in a similar way.
Meier fresh out of buisness school responded to a job advertisement of the FC in a newspaper. Those were the times ,today it is all nepotism

He must be seriously in the running for the HSV & Frankfurt jobs then...
Or he just didn't want the bullshit that comes with being a former Dortmund and Leverkusen coach in Koln...... ;)

I think he's one of the most overrated coaches in the game. But he could do well.
Falko Götz
He's got a HUGE DERBY on Sunday in Kiel.......

I only read a few comments on the official FC message board, but my impression is that Daum's unexpected move abroad is regarded as completely unacceptable even by former worshippers. I never liked the cult which surrounded Daum. He brought us back to the Bundesliga, but only in his second year and after a very hard struggle. He must have done something right this season, and I don't mind saying "Thank you" for the quiet season we were allowed to enjoy, but the timing of Daum's exit is simply poor.
The fact that some people expect a tough second year in the Bundesliga now that Daum is gone surprises me a bit. It would have been a tough second year even with Daum in charge, and maybe it's not unfair to assume that he expected the same and was therefore even more tempted by the offer he got. But okay, that's idle speculation. Anyway, if he hoped to cement his hero status by leaving us now, then he seriously miscalculated the state of mind of many FC fans. A local newspaper chose as a headline "Daum climbs down from his pedestal," and that's something which might even prove helpful for the future manager.
Great to hear that Geromel is going to stay in Cologne, and too bad that our new shirt is mostly red again. Can we send this design with Daum to Turkey and please get a new shirt as well?

because Meier officially contacted him.
well right now it looks like it comes down to Slomka or Soldo.
I favour Soldo slightly. He may be unexpierienced but I think he had already as a player the skills you need to become a good trainer.
Somtimes you have to take a risk to gain something
and he was succesful with his first club in croatia

Zvonimir Soldo (http://www.fussballdaten.de/spieler/soldozvonimir/). Former defensive midfielder who spent quite a bit of time at Stuttgart. Had a very good '98 World Cup for Croatia.
Retired a couple years ago but I didn't know he was now coaching, tbh. :o

Former Stuttgart player. We wanted to sign him a couple of years ago even though he was already way in his thirties because of his leadership qualities. Back then he declined because he wanted to make his trainer license.
He then went back to croatia and took over at Dinamo Zagreb for a half series and became champion.
Problem is this would be the first time he would do the summer preparations for a team.
