I just started out my collection. Sadly with two very cookie-cutter scarves, a DC United scarf and the horrid Nike "US National Team" scarf (sent a friend to purchase one at the US-China game for me and that's what he came back with...blech). Also have a Spurs one on the way.

I'm curious to see how people come by their scarves. I did some poking around on foreign ebays and god knows there's a lot there, but I'd prefer my collection to actually be a record of where I've been/matches I've watched. Of course, that's conducive to a very small collection. :D What are other people doing?

I've been to Europe a few times and on each trip I get a few scarves.

I've made a lot of friends in Europe who have sent me scarves.

I've traded for a few. I think I'm around 175 or so right now.

i do pretty much the same. i've got a scarf from the club of every ground i've been to. i've also got a couple of national team scarves, one for each team i've seen at home. the only scarves i've gotten from clubs that i haven't been to have been gifts from friends or acquaintences at those clubs. i'd have to count them, but i'd guess i've got around thirty scarves, from around 25 teams.

I've gotten scarves:

visiting the stadium either for a game or just visiting the ground
visiting the country
friends and relatives visiting somewhere and bringing me one back
trade.

None right now. But I am in the market for a Columbus Crew one and Fulham FC scarf for the office. I need something to brighten up the hideous Cleveland Browns decor my co-workers have put up.

All scarves are "real" regardless of whether or not they are "officially licensed merchandise."

That's part of the charm.

As to the rest, what Panic said. I get them as I travel around. My friends, relations, and coworkers have long since learned that if they travel overseas that a scarf makes a great souvenir if they're shopping for me.

I also tend to buy generic "U.S.A." scarves to use for trade when I travel abroad to the World Cup.
