Article in Kicker about the most expensive UEFA transfers this season.

http://www.kicker.de/content/news/artikel.asp?folder=8100&object=270543&liga=1&saison=2002/03&spieltag=3&spielpaarung=&turnier=&gruppe=4454

If someone wants to do some math about who spent the most money (Club, League, etc) over the past three years, go right ahead. What I’d be really interested in seeing is a list of payrolls for the European top clubs or leagues over the past few years. Anyone know where I can find that?

***2002***
01. Ferdinand (England), Leeds United>Manchester United: 47.0 Mil.
02. Adriano (Brazil), Inter Milan>AC Parma: 30.0 Mil.
03. Anelka (France), Paris St. Germain>Manchester City: 18.0 Mil.
04. Diouf (Senegal), RC Lens>FC Liverpool: 15.0 Mil.
05. Javi Moreno (Spain), AC Milan>Atletico Madrid: 14.0 Mil.
06. Bonera (Italy), AC Brescia>AC Parma: 13.0 Mil.
07. Viana (Portugal), Sporting Lissabon>Newcastle United: 12.5 Mil.
08. Maccarone (Italy), Empoli>FC Middlesbrough: 12.3 Mil.

19. Frings (Germany) Werder Bremen>Borussia Dortmund: 8.5 Mil.
19. Franca (Brazil), FC Sao Paulo>Bayer Leverkusen: 8.5 Mil.

Observations:
- Where does Middlesbrough get its money from?
- Leeds knows when to cash out.

19. Andrea Pirlo (Italy) - Inter Milan>AC Milan: 18.4 Mil.
20. Philippe Cristanval (France) - AS Monaco>FC Barcelona: 18.6 Mil.

Notes:
- I believe I normalized 2001 figures into the Euro exchange rate effective at the time (on the books anyway). I used the ratio I got from Kicker by dividing Zidane's DM141.0 into €75 million, both of which were listed in Kicker, which gave me the memorable ratio of 0.53191489361702127659574468085106)

Those transfers show why the italian teams are in deep financial trouble .Years of mad spending has ruined them and turned the whole transfer market into a farce.

As for middlesbrough..
where does their money come from??

answer== their rich owner

Interesting figures. Anelka to Man City is the third highest transfer this offseason but it wouldn't even make the top 20 the season before.

With the recent last-minute transfers, I've updated the list (new values taken from UEFA.com). Italy has apparently legalized the printing of money, or maybe it was stupidity. All German transfers have dropped out of the top 20. Note that at €9.5m, Ze Roberto is Munich's most expensive signing ever (and Ballack doesn't even make any list).

Accoriding to an August article on the Kicker Web site, Fenerbahce paid six million Euros. A May article (before the transfer) at soccernet.com states that Fener were going to 7.5 million to River Plate and 2.5 to Parma, who apparently still held some rights to the player. UEFA.com, perhaps the most trustworthy source, lists him at 8.1 million (http://www.uefa.com/FootballCentral/transfers/index,newsId=22618.html).
