Anyone interested in these types of tunes? Jazz, Lounge, nu-jazz, etc. etc. Pretty obvious I'm a bossa fan, whether it be old school bossa nova or nu-school electronic brazil sounds. But I might be jsut as big of a nu-jazz fan. Probably even more.

So I'm curious on a few takes and recs. Nicodemus has given me some cool cuts in the past to check out. And I know of a few good comps for anyone into the new scene.

One that was just released in the US was Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe vol. 4. The previous 3 of this series were pretty solid too, but this one is a bit more jazzy, a little more original. Awesome artists - heavy Koop styled influences. And this has a fantastic UFO cut and a cool Nathan Haines track. Also got Zuco 103, Infracom, Bobby Hughes Como and Metropolital Jazz Affair kickin' in. What's interesting to me is that one track by Nicolette sampled a bit from another acid/nu-jazz dj in the cut "No Government" who of course samples elsewhere... his name?

DJ CAM. Dude's been everywhere, all sorts of comps. He does some hip-hop flavor, and a little jazz, acid jazz, etc. Don't think he's much on the re-mix scene but his album from 95-96 "Mad Blunted Jazz" is still a bit of a staple. Pretty dark, but still great.

Anyone else?

Alex, can you clue me in on Vinicius Cantuaria? Not sure if he falls into these genres, but he's Brazilian and he's recent so whatever...I heard one song by him and loved it. Any recommendations?

He's not really in this genre at all. But I enjo talking about the Brazilian tunes. ;) He's a talented musician that's worked with and toured with some big names in Bossa Nova and MPB (Musica Popular Brasil). He's most known for a melancholic mood (and very acoustic driven), folkish music from Northern Brasil and Bossa Nova. Some of his songs have been co-written with Arto Lindsay, Caetano Veloso and more recently in the 90's he worked with Japanese composer/producer Ryiuchi Sakamoto. I believe he also did some work with David Byrne too... can't remember the track I'm thinking of.

I love his music. I have Sol Na Cara, Tocuma and Vinicius, and plan to get "Live at Skirball" later this year. He's a terrific guitar player and his voice is very smooth. However you never listen to him to get into an energized mood. There was an internet radio station that used to play his music... I forgot what it was, I listened to it a few years ago. Hard to suggest just one of his albums - I picked them up actually from most recent to oldest, and liked the older ones better. But Tocuma is great IMO.

However - he was on a compilation titled "Brasil 2Mil", that came out in 1999. The cut there "Sim Pisar no Chao" was from "Sol Na Cara", and the compilation in general is fantastic with Smoke City, David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, Suba, Zuco 103, Andrea marquee, Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi, Arnaldo Artunes/Marisa Monte (before they were Tribalistas!), Lenine, etc. I recommend that one - unless that's the cut you've already heard. I think we talked about him a bit here:

If you like Vinicius Cantuaria, you'd probably also like Celso Fonseca & his newest CD "Natural".

Thanks, Alex. I'm glad you mentioned his work with Arto Lindsay. Guess I had never read the liner notes on my Lindsay albums very well. I checked and sure enough, Cantuaria co-wrote about half the songs on "O Corpo Sutil" and "Mundo Civilizado". Too bad Cantuaria doesn't sing on those albums, I prefer his voice to Lindsay's.

The song that initially prompted my question is called "Perritos" and it's on Bill Frisell's "Intercontinentals" CD. It's like you say, not something to get you energized, more of a laid-back Jobim bossa feel to it. I'll have to check out his solo stuff. Thanks again for the info!
