My boss is making a "highlights" video for the local high school football team...

He asked me for some suggestions on songs to use as background music, anyone have any thoughts?

I suppose the most obvious would be "Doctorin' The Tardis" by the Timelords (might be filed under the KLF).

ESPN has put out an entire CD series called "Jock Jams" that have pretty much every song played at any arena anywhere in America.

If your boss feels like plagerizing, he can take the music they use on those NFL Films highlights (with or without John Facenda).

But please, for the love of Adu, do not use EMF's "Unbelievable".

And I think the use of that SmashMouth song ("Hey now, you're a rock star") is now a legally viable excuse for murder in any court of law.

At the Holiday Bowl luncheon this year they played highlight reels for both Texas and WSU. Texas' highlights began with a song that worked really well:
Linkin Park's "Faint". That song kicks ass...

If they had hair on their balls, they would use "We Had the Time of Our Lives".

That's funny you bring it up, because the Texas highlight reel I mentioned above closed with that song by Green Day...

Eminem's "Lose Yourself".... not really a sport song, but it talked about being nervious, "One shot", etc.

"Bed for the Scraping" by Fugazi. Not the whole song, just the part where he sings over and over "I don't want to be defeated". Nothing pumps me up for playing soccer more than this song.

Paul Oakenfold's "Ready, Steady, Go" remix
would be perfect. It was played during the chase scene in The Bourne Identity, among other places. You've probably heard it and just didn't know what it was. It should work great... I can email you the mp3 if you're interested...

Then there's also the aptly named:

"The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" by Colourbox.

What's the name of that song synonymous with the NFL? It's played nearly everytime there's a touchdown and (climaxes with the audience shouting "HEY!")?

Feeder "Just a day" is good - Irish posters that have seen RTE's late night WC2002 highlight video will know what I mean.

"Looks like it's the big toe area"

It's "Doctor In The Tardis" by the Timelords (the KLF), a remake of "Rock and Roll, Pt. 2".

A good teamwork sounding song is Queen's "One Vision" (you have to edit a bit, because the song is actually about Jesus), although I much prefer the Laibach cover "Geburt Einer Nation" (although it is in German).

When the clock is running out, you can use the chorus of Europe's "Final Countdown", although again I prefer the Laibach cover.

If you want a fascist celebration of power, use Laibach's "Life is Life", which is far better than the hippie original by the Australian band Opus. (Of course you want a fascist celebration of power! As Clausewitz would have said if he saw the sport, "Football is the continuation of war by other means".)

Laibach is good for everything. People should get married to Laibach.

I knew my life was missing something. A fascist celebration of power. Now, where did I put all my brown shirts, hmm...

I always thought what really made Rocky, other than the joy of watching an undersized white guy win the hearts of America by beating up bigger, brutish black guys, was the music. The grandness of tracks like "Gonna Fly Now" and "Going The Distance" was the perfect complement to Rocky's working class sensibilities.
When they played those two songs at the NFC Championship game at Philadelphia, I got chills even though I was rooting against the Eagles.

Correct assesment.
However, us who live around here constantly hear those tunes played to the death so it's no more inspirational than your average elevator tune.

Consider this - there has been no less than a *dozen* times musical bands open their show with the tune "Gonna Fly Now". Last one I recall was Belle & Sebastian. Even a small, lovable band like I am the World Trade Center opened up their Philly show with that bastardized tune....

They use fascist sounds and images for satire and subversively advocating their own political views (which may itself be another satire). The final stanza of "Life is Life" is a real twist on the rest of the song.

But football is closely associated with war. Remember that the NFL itself had ads a few years ago with the Edwin Starr song "War" where they took out the words "What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" and just kept "War!" and the grunts. That sounds pretty fascist to me. (Oh, and the Laibach cover of "War" is just soooooo awesome. They totally turn the song on its head and 180° around.)
