Best regards from Germany and Schalke 04!

In this threat I will try to bring you my favourite team FC Schalke 04 a little bit closer. I go to all home matches and about 80% of the away matches, so you´ll find from now on here match reports and news about Schalke 04.

My club was founded 4th May, 1904 which means that we become 100 years old in a couple of months. Schalke is a part of Gelsenkirchen, our hometown. Our stadium is called "Arena AufSchalke" and has a capacity of 61,266 and we are sold out each home match. Our colours are blue/white, so the people call us "Royal Blues".

Our biggest success was the victory of the UEFA Cup in 1997 when we beat Inter Milan in the final. In 2001 we won the German DFB Cup (2:0 against Union Berlin) and became Vicechampions, in 2002 we won the German DFB Cup aswell (4:2 against Leverkusen).

Our target for this season was to reach rank 5, but we played a bad first half and finnished as 8th. So we all hope it becomes better and we finnish this season on a UEFA Cup rank.

For next season our manager just tries to bring a squad together which is able to play Champions League. We bought Ailton and Kristajic from Bremen and maybe Bordon from Stuttgart. If we can get maybe 3 or 4 further players of these class, we are ready to attack...

The Bundesliga will start again on friday, 30th January. We start with an away match against our enemy from Dortmund. A mate told me, that FOX WORLD SPORT will show the match live, so you guys better dont miss it. The stadium will be sold out with 83,000 fans and about 15,000 Schalker will be there...we´ll rock the scum´s house!

I hope that I could bring you our team a little bit closer for now. I will update this threat weekly with match reports, news and other comments!

A question I've always wondered from an uneducated American: What is Schalke?

You mean what Schalke means if you would translate it into English? That´s not possible, it has no meaning...it´s just a name of a part of a city!

Did I read somewhere that Schalke has sold its gate receipts for the next X years in return for cash now? I'm not sure whether this is the greatest idea ever, or the stupidest idea ever. It may be the greatest idea ever because it: (a) gives the team cash up front to bolster its roster during a time when teams don't have much cash to spend; and (b) gives the team the ability to totally forego (or at least greatly reduce) marketing expenditures (giving the team money to spend elsewhere) and reduces the need to put anything vaguely resembling an attractive (in terms of playing style) team on the field. Who cares if the fans come--Schalke has already gotten paid. It may be the dumbest idea ever because it: (a) money burns a hole in your pocket and relieves you of your common sense; (b) greatly increases the need to make the right acquisitions now; (c) decreases the incentive to plan for the future; (d) significantly reduces flexibility in later years. What happens when Ailton and others don't work out? Schalke is stuck, since they've mortgaged their future.

I try to explain it, but my English it not the best, so I hope you´ll understand what I try to say.

We got 85 Mio. € from a company and we have to pay them each year about 6 Mio. € for the next 23 years. This is unusual for German teams, but in for example England a lot of teams did it. I agree, that it´s a little bit risky, but how should we else get 85 Mio. € cash? Now it´s the task of the management to buy good players who are able to win titles and play each year in the Champions League. I guess if we played 5 times in a row in the CL and reached maybe the 1/4 Final, the we can pay a lot of money back earlier than we have to.

But even if our team is too bad and plays not what they are supposed to (like in the last 2 years), it costs us only 6 Mio. € per year...and we with the new Arena about 9 Mio. € per year. So it could never cost us our existence.

In the last years, we put only money into "stones". Means we payed from the money a part of the bank debts back we had to make for the new Arena, we just build Germany´s biggest Rehabilitation Centre, we built a bigger youth academy and new offices for our management.

But now we put more money again into "legs"...so we get Ailton and Kristajic from Bremen and Bordon from Stuttgart (in 2005). So we need 4 or 5 futher very good players and we are ready to attack.

I think it was a good decision to lease the money!

Schalke will sign Bordon from Stuttgart for 2005! The 28 year old Brasilian defence player has still a contract at Stuttgart for next season. With a little bit luck, they let him go for next season if we pay them, but it looks like he will come in 2005.

I'm a Twente supporter from Holland and as you probably know we've always had very friendly relations with Schalke fans (thanks to Youri Mulder and Niels Oude Kamphuis). So good luck to ya, you're my favourite club in Germany.

Is Schalke’s goal to field an all left-footed team? You already have van Kerckoven, Matellan,Kobiashvili, Trojan, Bohme, you’ve signed Krstajic and Ailton and now you’re after Bordon? What’s the deal?

Yes, I know our teams have a good relation. We have lots of Fanclubs in Holland and Belgium aswell. Had you ever been at our Arena AufSchalke? If not and you would like to see a match, let me know and I´ll get you a ticket for a match of your choice...

@ aloisius:

If you look at the positions where the players normally play, you will recognize, that for example Böhme and Trojan or Kristajic and Matellan would play on the same position. So never all players you mentioned would play at the same time...

Official statement from www.schalke04.de

21.01.2004 Brazilian central defender Marcelo Bordon signs four-year contract

FC Schalke 04 have completed their first transfer for the 2005/06 season, it was announced today. On Tuesday evening Marcelo José Bordon put pen to paper on a four-year contract that will enter into force on 1 July 2005 and tie the Brazilian, who is currently on the books of VfB Stuttgart, to the Royal Blues until 30 June 2009.

"He's a great defender who will fit in well and have a major effect on Schalke's fortunes in the next few years", said a delighted general manager Rudi Assauer, who travelled to Stuttgart along with team manager Andreas Müller to secure the 28-year-old's signature after the Brazilian central defender had verbally agreed to join the club in the summer of 2005. "They were very pleasing discussions. Marcelo has kept his word", continued Assauer.

Head coach Jupp Heynckes also gave a very positive assessment of the new signing: "Marcelo Bordon has developed into one of the strongest defenders in the Bundesliga. He oozes authority and personality on the pitch and will become an important player for the team due to his human qualities and his character."

Since moving to VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 1999, Bordon has made 114 Bundesliga appearances and scored seven goals. The Brazilian previously played for Sao Paulo and Botafogo in his home country.

Yes I've been to AufSchalke, saw your home game against Dortmund thanks to Twente's supporters association Vak-P. But thanks all the same, let me know if you ever want to see a Twente game.

Yes, that would be great. I had been only in two grounds in Holland yet, and that were the stadiums of Roda Kerkrade and De Graafschap. So I really would like to watch a Twente match.

You saw our home match against the scum? Do you liked it? What a pity we got the 2:2 in the last minute...

I maybe (its not 100% certain yet) have a ticket for Doofmund vs. Schalke left (Friday, 30.01.04 at 20h)...for the case I have a ticket too many, do you wanne come along to see the match?!

Write me an eMail, so we can speak about the Twente match and the B*B away...

SchalkeSupporter - How do you like Mike Hanke? Do you think he will get much playing time? What do think is his potential? Can he become a major striker in the Bundesliga and perhaps for Germany?

I've seen him play twice (Fox Sports World, here in the States), and he looks pretty good. He is very active, aggressive, and apears to have skill. But my brief viewings of Hanke in action were too little to tell what his potential might be.

As you can see, I've got Bayern listed as one of my teams. Don't hold that against me :) I've followed them since the days of Rummenigge's playing days and the only soccer on TV here in the States was "Soccer Made in Germany". But, anyway, I've always liked the fans from Schalke and your hated Dortmund. These two sets of fans represent the most loyal and enthusiastic fans in Germany, IMHO.
