Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

Wow. Its own forum. Cool. I have found one cache in my life. It was a pretty awesome one, too, IMO. There's actually one a half mile from my house, but I haven't been able to find it and feel kind of stupid, as Ive looked multiple times. I haven't looked since I downloaded a nice geocaching app for the iphone.

I often wonder about adopting this as an outdoors activity I could enjoy. Never started though.

FWIW, I recently had to acquire a few titles on geocaching for the public library system I work for (I'm the non-fiction Selector for our system) due to increased interest, mostly driven by high school clubs.

The main site for this activity seems to be => http://www.geocaching.com/
You can type in your zip code and try to figure out location of those hidden items in your region, part of what are described as "718,116 active geocaches around the world"... massive GPS-driven web treasure hunt I guess...

I've been geocaching for a few years, now. It makes for a nice excuse to get outside in the woods somewhere. Doesn't hurt that I'm also a geographer.
Can make for a nice cheap date, too, if you've got a girl who has a bit of an outdoor adventure streak in her.

My daughter does it with her kids. They really love it. Gets the kids out and about. You can even use a TomTom One if you have enought battery power.

Interesting. Unfortunately, however, many driving GPS units designed for vehicles can only get you within a 'general' range of the target coordinates because they do not way-point find at a large enough the scale for "walking to" purposes. I find that the best option is using any hand-held way-point finder GPS unit (with compass), such as those made by Garmin or Magellan, or even using a cell-phone with a good GPS app.

I'm guessing geocaching is one of Huss's favorite new hobbies. Hard to believe there was much pent-up demand on BS for where only 3 posters in almost 3 weeks even participates.

Local yokels are regularly closing down roads and sending their bomb sniffing robots after geocaches. Its all a result of the massive epidemic of bridge sapping weve suffered over the last decade.

I randomly saw this forum last week and I decided to check out geocaching... it's pretty fun. There are a lot in my county and the past few days I've gone out with some friends to find them. Over 4 days we looked for 16 and found 10 of them. So at least we're above a 50% success rate. :)
One of them was a tough hike... had to cross a river using a fallen tree and climb two really steep hills... and that one was probably my favorite. :D
