I see a lot of teams using the 4-2-3-1 formation. Is it more popular than 4-4-2 now?
Is it a good evolution for the game in term of open/attacking/attractive football?

4-3-3
I like the 4-3-3. I feel like the 4-2-3-1 is like a modified 4-3-3. For example Ajax is a team that traditionally plays in the 4-3-3 but lately their lineup has looked a bit like this.
VdWiel--Wielaert--Vertonghen--Vermaelen
Gabri------------Enoh
Sulejmani
Suarez----Cvitanich----Urby
Ajax uses two holding midfielders supporting an attacking midfielder who pushes up to join the the forwards regularly. Kind of like the 4-2-3-1, I guess you could call it 4-2-1-3.
Symantics....It's all about the tendencies of the players and what their attacking/defensive responsibilities are. Ajax's formation is very dynamic right now so it's hard to categorize.
