Was this Balboa's first time in the booth for ESPN?

I thought he was several steps better than Ty.

Hope there's more of him.

I could do without hearing the nickname "Popie" ever again.

He was decent, but needs to learnto speak up a bit to be heard over Rob Stone.

As I said on the thread on the national team board talking about this, I think that Ty has been dropped by ESPN/SUM/MLS/US Soccer.

Ty didn't do the Final Four, replaced by Harksie, and now 'Celo replaced him with the national team's first game.

In the past, the Final Four and the friendlies were Ty staples but he has missed them both.

He's surely not foolish enough to just take some time off, not when he knows the likes of Celo, Harkies, Waldo, Lalas and Ramos are all out there as potential replacements with more personality and a better soccer resume.

So, I think he's done. At least for national team games. Don't know about MLS, but we'll see soon enough.

As for 'Celo, I thought he did a nice job. Not the smoothest but that will come with time as he gets more experience but the insights and obervations he shared were refreshing and things you never got from Ty, who was as lively as skim milk.

He corrected himself a few times. I think someone in the truck was telling him the same thing. That stuff from Bob Ley used to drive me nuts.

I'm going to try to remember this thread when, in two years, the Cello backlash is in full-force. It has happened to every soccer PBP and analyst so far since the early days of MLS.

MLS/SUM is obviously holding on-air auditions for domestic soccer analysts among the candidates from the 1st MLS generation: Balboa, Harkes, Wynalda, and Lalas (if he retires again).

With the 1st MLS generation of analysts now available, services of the analysts from the NASL generation (Ty Keough, Seamus Malin) are no longer needed by MLS/SUM.

Tommy Smyth remains a cult favorite and will still do some USMNT games on ESPN/ESPN2 in the US (if there is no conflict with his primary gig at ESPN International) in addition to being the #1 English-language soccer analyst on broadcasts primarily targeted for ESPN Australia and ESPN New Zealand, with Eddie Mighten #2 and Seamus Malin #3.

Glenn Davis, a former ASL semi-pro (which existed between the NASL and MLS), made the transition from analyst to play-by-play probably for business reasons after FOX Sports World was launched in 1997.

Perhaps 10 years from now, someone will wonder why Lalas, Balboa, Harkes, and Wynalda are no longer doing TV and someone else will start a thread bitching and moaning about the analysis by the likes of Landon Donovan (who has the gift of gab and is destined to do TV after he finishes playing.)

In that case there will be cries for Donovan to be replaced by Jim Curtin, if Jimmagh hasn't already goten an analysts gig.

I miss Jack Edwards. He seemed like a fan of the game as well as an announcer and looked like he was having fun at WC. I'm still thankful that JP Dellacamera is the voice of Metro
