What would the score be if the best NY Cosmos team of all time, at their peak, played today's San Jose Earthquakes on neutral ground?
Assume they play on grass, in Columbus.
Who would score the goals?

Look at it this way. By what margin would the 2001 Detroit Lions beat the 1976 Raiders? Or the 2000 Yankees over the 1977 Yankees? Nutritional insights, physical training, and offensive/defensive techniques are so far superior, that even a poor to mediocre team would dominate a great team from a previous era. That said:

Earthquakes 4
Cosmos 1
Goals:
Graziani 1
Ekelund 1
Donovan 2
Chinaglia 1
Those Cosmos oldtimers would spend most of the game tired and confused.
"Where did all these Americans come from?" they would ask.
"This field sure is wide."
They would continually complain to the ref: "That wasn't offside! I was behind the 35-yard line!"
And for that matter, "Where the hell IS the 35-yard line?"
"The scoreboard must be broken--that clock is counting up!"
To keep their spirit up in the second half, they'd keep telling themelves "We just need three more goals, then we can win this thing in the shootout."
"Well, at least we get a point in the standings for that goal we scored."

I love my Earthquakes, but our defense isn't so good right now,and we are talking about a Cosmos team with God himself on that NY team, I think the 2001Earthquakes are better than 2002, so
2001Earthquakes 4-3 Ny Cosmos
Donovan3,Lagos1,Pele3
2002Earthquakes 1-3 NY Cosmos
Donovan,Pele3

Cosmos 3, Earthquakes 0.
If it's on artificial turf, 4-0.
Chinaglia scores twice. I remember watching those Cosmos teams, and I just don't see today's Quakes beating them. If they played four times maybe the Quakes would take a game.

I seem to recall the '79 Cosmos playing the then World Cup champ Argentina with Kempes, Passarella, Ardiles, etc to a stand still for before losing 1 nil on a late goal. If they played SJ at Spartan Stadium the narrow field would slow the Cosmos down but not stop them. Anywhere else the Earthquakes would more than have their hands full.

That's what I was thinking..
Let's remember that the Quakes were the #5 seed heading into the playoffs last season..
This would be a better match against either the 98' DC United team or the 00' Chicago Fire..
98' United team is probably the best team MLS has seen so far in it's short history..
Of course, there will be a lot of flack on that issue but this lineup is hard to beat considering the form they were in at the time...
-------------------- Garlick ----------------------
Harkes ------ Llamosa ----- Pope --------- Goose
Olsen ------- Williams ----- Etch ---------- Sanneh
-------------- Moreno ----- Lassiter --------------

To the best of my recollection, that is the starting line-up the Cosmos could field on any given day in 1979. Keep in mind a couple of those guys were playing out of their natural positions. And sitting the bench were pretty much another starting 11 for any other team.

No way, the Earthquakes are killing any team DC puts out, the league is way better than last year and the years previous, straight up!
