Hey all,
I'm thinking of having this procedure to assure the wife and I don't have anymore children.
We already have to two young wonderful boys and we don't want to try for the girl.
Have any of you had this procedure? If so, comments?
Thanks,
IASocFan

Yep, I've had it twice. I was married - two kids, wife didn't want anymore and was considering sterilzation. We talked it over. At 28, I did it. Worked third shift Thursday night/Friday morning, got clipped Friday morning, went home with my ice bags. Played golf Monday after work. Not a great idea, but I got through it.
At 37, my wife decided that she was tired of being married to me and that I loved soccer more than her. At 38, I divorced and re-married a gal that loves children. In the month of my 40th birthday, I reversed; took almost a month off recovering, and had two more kids within 2 1/2 years. That was enough. At 43, I had my second on a Friday afternoon, and relaxed all weekend. Didn't need any vacation for any V.
Another story, my wife's niece had four beautiful kids and her husband had a V. At the age of 44, she thought she was going through the stage, no periods. Whoops, one of those pesky sperm cells somehow got through. She was pregnant. They tested the Dad - who is now called THE MAN! Still sterile! Good news: they love the kid; he's beautiful; they made some adjustments, she could afford to quit her job, oldest daughter decided not to move away so she could help and get to know her little brother.

Thanks,
no, but if any man is going to have a sigmoidoscopy, don't let a woman do it...

Does the child have a strange likeness to the milkman by any chance?

I had it done last year. The procedure I had was "no scalpel"--the guy gave me a local right in the scrotum, made a very small incision, and then snipped the relevent pipes through that small hole. I drove home (stick shift, btw) twenty minutes or so after sitting down for the procedure. Sore for maybe one day, completely discomfort-free within a couple days after that.
EDIT: According to the specialist I went to, this particular procedure is non-reversable. To be clear--they don't simply cut the tubes, they actually cut out a length of them, so that you can't simply reattach the requisite equipement if you change your mind down the line. So there's a trade-off for being a quick, nearly painless procedure with a very short recovery time.

Like IASocFan, I've had it done twice too - for different reasons. After the first one I tested with a higher sperm count after (they wait 4-6 weeks and then assess a semen sample) than before. So I got to do it again, though I politely declined to pay for the second one. This time the doc soldered my snipped ends, and I must admit to finding it odd to see smoke arising from that part of my body.
We had two children and I was 33; my wife almost died during both pregnancies but really came close to cashing out during the second one. A vasectomy is the simplest way to prevent accidental pregnancy - the complete lack of recovery time means it would be incredibly selfish (IMO) to ask a woman to have her tubes tied, have a hysterectomy, or have a D&C performed instead.
Plus now I get to joke about how it took two vasectomies to do me in!

Do it! Best use of my medical insurance ever.
Hurts like a bitch, but still not as bad as the female version.
Really nothing should ever make you that happy to stick a bag of ice down your pants - but the pain is relatively short-lived all things considered.

Don't act too "cool" during the consultation. The docs all gauge how nervous the guy seems and then decide whether to offer valium for the morning of the procedure. You want the valium!
The "area" needs to be shaved. Allow your wife to do it. It will give her something to talk about for many years. :D
(and if you think your beard itches as it grows in ... )
In return, remind her that you need her to help "clean out your pipes" so that you test for 0 sperm. ;)

You know what's weird? It really doesn't hurt. I've had shots in my arm more painful than that.
It's a great procedure--much easier to recover from than the standard procedure. And the recovery time is nothing--if you can find a specialist who's certified (I understand it's sort of new so you might not have luck) I recommend it.

Oh f'k that, there's more!
This time the doc soldered my snipped ends, and I must admit to finding it odd to see smoke arising from that part of my body.I actually shoved my hand down my pants after reading that one, to reinsure 'the fellas'. That's far beyond scary.
(and if you think your beard itches as it grows in ... ) :eek:Long story involving an (in hindsight, slightly loony) ex, but yes, that is the worst itch ever. I never thought I would use the word 'incomprehensible' to describe an itch, but...

went through with it a week ago exactly....
only pain was the injection to the scrotum, not the testicles of course. In a pain scale of 1-10 i'd place it at about a 5.
I used pain medication the rest of the day and didn't need it after that. the swelling went down after about 4 days.
All in all it was fairly pain free and now i don't need to worry about any 'accidental' pregnancies....
