We have been beating each other up over hats and dropped balls for the past couple of weeks, so let's have some fun.

What "non referee uniform" stuff have you seen on the field?

My example:
We have a referee that is one of the top neurosurgeons in our area. He wears a pager and a blackberry in a holster on his waist when he refs. Looks kinda funny, but if he gets a call and must leave the match, somebody's having brain surgery. Hasn't happen yet to my knowledge.

A stopwatch on a lanyard around the neck. Utterly ridiculous.

Not something I was wearing, but about 15 years ago when portable phones were just new, my wife came running onto the field at halftime. The computer system I was responsible for was down. I called the computer room. From the middle of the field, I determined that the Hardware Engineer was on the way and that I had about 1 hour before my presence was necessary. I finished the game and headed to work.

Most people use brain surgery as an analogy for something difficult, as in: "it ain't brain surgery". What analogy does he use?

We have a referee instructor that also refs. He wears these huge white rimmed glasses. I guess it's an effort to be sarcastic.

I love it.

But did he talk to the players like Charles Nelson Reilley? That would just be too much! :D

p.s. I couldn't find a picture of him wearing a hat, oh wait, that is another short thread....

Well the 'hat' thread morphed into an eyeglass thread so perhaps this is now the place for hats.

With that said, one of our more senior members wears the following:

Sloggers Wide Brim Hat at http://www.sloggers.com/hats.htm

For 'big' games, he tones it down and acquiesces to a baseball cap.

I used to play soccer at lunch time (pickup, informal) with a guy who wore one of those to play. It was sublime to watch him head the ball... he'd line up on the ball, remove the hat, head the ball, and have his hat back on - all without breaking stride!

Cold weather brings out the best non-official wear. You have your hooded sweatshirts under the jersey (a great hunchback look here), your sweats under the shorts, and your special winter hats. My favorite is a center who wears a wool winter hat with brim and the ear flaps tied down.

I don't mind the tights, nylon pants over the shorts, unhooded sweatshirts under the short sleeved shirts, and normal hats at my level, but let's have a little sense of fashion here, please...:+)

Only ran into it once. A younger ref wore cologne. Bathed in it actually. Either that or he spilled it.

Cologne and perfume give me headaches.

It was so strong I had to cut the pregame short. Usually I check the player passes for both teams but this time I did one team and had the ARs do the other team. I told him that I wanted to get a good start so I sent him to check the nets while I did the coin flip.

Would this count as "wearing" something that is not approved?

This reminds me of a SuperY game, BU17 I was middle for. As I walked by the bench of the home team, my eyes started to water they WREAKED so badly. This was early on in the Axe/Tagg craze. As I was clearing my throat all I said to the coach standing there was, "Wow, coach....", he just shook his head and gazed to the sky. Guess the Axe/Tagg thing hasn't made it to England yet...

HaHa. Were you doing a women's match by any chance? Maybe he was hoping to get lucky.

Has anyone tried the mantyhose yet? Methinks it is an extension of Comfilon that is in existence since the late 90s. I reckon this is the newest trend that is being marketed, and I would not be surprised to see more of them soon, people being human as they are.

And no, not the pink ones of course (too femmy) or the ones with butterflies. There is also a medical (post-op) one that I have seen, called TED stocking or somesuch to prevent clots; now this one is functional.

This is a Jim Gaffigan joke. His response is, "It's not like we're trying to pick up women." or something like that. A very funny comedian, that Jim Gaffigan.

Back in the day.... I had an AR who was an OBGYN, I looked over 20 minutes into the 2nd half he's in mid conversation and about 5 minutes later we locked eyes and he called me over. Turns out one of his patients was on the way to the hospital with a preemie. Finished the game with one AR.

RE: Tights, I used to have these:

They were helpful but not as good as I'd expected. They kept some heat in but didn't really help keep me that warm. I was much happier when I had some warmup pants.

The worst thing i have personally worn onto a field was during a 7:30 P.M. kickoff mens match in the last week of the fall season. With wind chill the temperature was in the single digits. My personal uniform consisted of two under layers of long sleeve turtle neck underarmour, the USSF warmup suit ontop of that, with the long sleeve USSF jersey ontop of everything topped off with a wool beanie. Wouldnt do it in anything but a mens game but we looked absolutely ridiculous. Stayed warm though.

A number of years ago, before NISOA introduced the current jersey style, the alternate uniform was a solid, BRIGHT orange long sleeve SHINY (and did I say BRIGHT?) polyester shirt. It was also sized 2 sizes too small, but back then, you had to buy it and hardly ever wore it. Had an end of the year college playoff match in the bitter cold. I layered about 3-4 shirts then the Bright Orange too-small top. Well I looked like the Orange Pillsburry Doughboy. My body was all puffy from the under layers but the wrist and neck were tight from the elastic. I would have loved to have a photo of that, because, well some of us make polyester look good!!!

Back when I played in HS in the late 80's, we were not allowed to wear sliding shorts or anything, and a late season game in IL can be REALLY cold. One day it was about 15 at kick off, and the wind was blowing snow around, all together a miserable day.

I had 'aquired' a pair of pantyhose and wore those under my shorts. I have to say, they did an amazing job of keeping me warm, and with all the tape I used to get, you couldn't really see them.

Of course my girlfriend at the time gave me no end of hell for it....

I haven't seen to much in the way of non-official gear in the short time I've been refing, but then it isn't as cold in VA.
