I am just curious. For everyone here that is a referee who has experienced rude gestures, foul language, etc. from fans and coaches, have you been less affected by road rage and or anger?

I'm not sure what your question is. Are you asking if we get angry? I never have. I've had players threaten me, and all I do is walk away and make a few phone calls and they aren't playing soccer anymore. At the end of the day, it should never be personal.

I'm sorry I kind of worded that poorly. I was just wondering if because being a referee exposes you to hated and screaming from some fans, you find that you get used to the yelling and swearing in other real life situations.
Like if someone yells at you for something in another life situation, you find that you just ignore them instead of yelling back.

I think that is probably true, but I don't think it is entirely a result of reffing. The people who are attracted to officiating in the first place don't exactly tend to be those who lose their temper easily (or at all).

I get very affected by things like road rage..particularly because the idiot who is all over the road is endangering my safety, or the safety of others.
Just the other day, I was on a 4-lane road at a light when a guy behind me immediately gunned it on green, passed me on the shoulder, nearly lost control of his truck only to stop at the next red light that was 75 yards in front of the first one. I pulled up next to him and said some things I wouldn't say to my Grandma.
That said, i obviously dont support ref abuse by parents or coaches because in most cases, a blown offside call isn't endangering anyone's safety. I hate seeing 4-3 games ruined by a losing coach blaming the referee for defeat. Sends the wrong message to the young ones - That a loss is the ref's fault and having fun doesn't matter.

You told him there was no way in hell you were ever going to wear that silly sweater he got you for Christmas?

I attribute my "laid-back" nature to surfing more so than referee work.. but it certainly helps as a referee to be level-headed. OTOH, more than a few times I should have sent a coach to his car and didn't. I'm working on that.
